Hi,
Please accept my apologies if this is off topic.
I have been working on an article that focuses on historical ascents of one of our mountains in Turkey, the Parmakkaya Tower (Finger Tower or DirekTas) which saw its 1st ascent in 1972 by John Waterman and Dennis Mehmet.
I tried to contact Dane Waterman (cousion of John Waterman) with a hope to get some information if possible but I was not successful to reach him.
I know John Waterman has passed away. But I have no clue about Mr.Dennis Mehmet -who was his partner in that ascent.
Unfortunately I do not know if Dennis Mehmet is (and hopefully) still alive; if he is, I would really appreciate if you can advise or help me to reach him or anyone who knows him in person that I could get some information.
Again I apologize if this is an off-topic request.
Thanks and kind Regards,
Burak Ozdogan

I climbed with both of them many years ago, but have heard nothing of Dennis's whereabouts in decades. It will be very interesting to see if your enquiry turns up any information.
If my memory is correct, Dennis wrote an essay about this climb which appeared in one of the issues of Ascent in the '70s. Are you familiar with this article? If not, I can see if I can locate it, or maybe one of the more tech-savvy others on this site will be able to scan it in and post it.
Good luck on your search. If you do contact Dennis, please give him my regards.

Hi Alan,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Pity his track is lost somehow.
I have the scanned copy of the article you mean. But it would be really great to reach Dennis Mehmet in person and listen the story from himself. I am sure it must be a great experience as those times climbing was not even a known sport inmy country and the mountains there were really wild and deserted from tourists.
In case to get to know Dennis and John, would you mind if I can ask you few questions also? (May I write you via email)
I would definitely let you know if I can reach him.
Thanks,
Burak

Sure Burak, I'll be happy to 'talk' with you by email about those guys. Try to reach me through the 'contact' application on supertopo. If that doesn't work we'll try something else. Alan

Alan & Burak, the ST messaging function hasn't worked for the last year or two. One of you needs to post an email address for the other to send to.

This is certainly NOT off-topic. This sort of effort to connect represents one of the best functions of this website, IMHO

Hi BurakOzdogan, I too am interested in finding some more information about this peak, and its ascents. Have you had any luck, and would you be able to post or send me the article in Ascent you have?
Thanks!

I knew Dennis Mehmet during a time he lived in Berkeley, early eighties. Soon after that I heard he had emigrated to Australia.

Like Al Rubin, I too was a climbing partner of Dennis Mehmet, along with John Waterman. In 1972 I met with both of them in the Alps, where John and I did some climbing together. But I was dimly aware that the two of them were planning to travel overland to Turkey for some climbing there.
My major connection with Dennis was climbing in the Shawangunks and I haven't heard anything about him for over two decades. In the late 60s and early 70s, I recall Dennis telling me that he was living in New York City and working as a bridge painer--by this he meant working on maintenance painting of major bridges like the George Washington Bridge, not artistic "bridge painting."
If he is still alive and well, please pass my regards to him.

Dennis and I were on-again-off-again friends/lovers in Berkeley in the 70's & 80's. We finally split up in Chukung, Nepal at 18K' but stayed in touch until he married an Australian woman and moved to, I think, Melbourne where her family lived. For awhile I was in touch with a former roommate of his who corresponded with him. He told me Dennis had lost an eye in a sandblasting accident and had taken up sea kayaking, which surprised me because he wasn't comfortable in the water when we were together. That's all I know about Dennis. I have a feeling he's alive and well in Australia.
If anyone gets contact info for him, I'd like to have it too.
Thanks, Stephani
