Hello Everyone!

I went Top Rope Soloing today at Independence Pass, and I ran into an issue. If I did not anchor my climbing side of the rope to the ground with a nut, the rope would continue to follow me up the climbing, thus, not feeding the rope through the gri gri. I foresee complications with this tactic, as you cannot retrieve your rope from the top of the wall, since it is anchored to the ground.

Is there another way to accomplish a proper set up, where the rope feeds through the grigri properly?

Thanks!

Grigris suck for top rope soloing. I use a rescucender and I have it rigged that I don't need to use a chest harness with it. Anchor at the top, use rope guards on the top rock edge, use a grigri to rap down the rope and place directional cams or quickdraws on the route if necessary. On the bottom I use a smaller rope bag as a weight hung on the line a few feet above the ground. Put your approach shoes and a water bottle in the bag, this way if something happens and you have to walk back around to the top you are not hiking in your climbing shoes. When climbing some people stop mid route and tie a loose knot on the rope below them in case the solo device fails. The knot will stop you from decking.

Most important is to have one ascender or prussic with you at all times. On one of my TR solos my directional cam ripped out and left me 20' away from the wall. I had no way to ascend the rope and after 20 minutes I could not get myself swinging to reach the wall. I was screwed! The only thing that saved me was I took the laces off of my shoes and made prussic loops out to them to ascend the rope. Now I always have a ascender with me! Solo devices go up easily, they don't go back down. Also tell somebody where you are going soloing so if you do get injured, somebody else knows where you are and you may eventually be rescued. I have TR soloed thousands of routes successfully with this method.
