Hi Supertacos - I'm headed to Rio for 9 days for work (Jan 31 - Feb 9), and would love to go climbing at some point when I'm there. I know there is great climbing there, and it's also going to be super hot when I'm around.

That said, if anyone has a) climbed there and knows any beta and/or b) knows someone who would be down to go for a climb I'd love to know!

I've been climbing around 9 years and am quite proficient at both trad and sport (though, at heart I'm more of a sport climber).

Thanks for any help!

There are stoopid rocks all over the Earth. There's only one Ipanema.
There's also only one Iguazu. That said a crack start to beat the heat
would make Sugarloaf a worthy goal. Plus you can take the civilized descent.

Lots of fun, recreational climbing around Rio and a also few hard test pieces as well (like Gullich's Southern Comfort). Many areas are easily accesible by bus, plus a little hiking, from Ipanema or any of the other beach resort areas. The only problem is it's probably gonna be way too hot to enjoy the climbing this time a year. I was there in July (in 1996). Even then it was warm, but cool enough (25-30 Celsius) to enjoy the rock. Most routes are "bolted" (in some cases: welcome to third world bolting) on granite and there are lots of moderate, multipitch routes. Apparently there is a slew of new, harder sport routes now, as well. We found a climbing store, bought a guide book (in portuguese) and went from there.

Good luck!

Wow, Yangui, that's still pretty dang warm, especially mid-winter down south. At those temps, I'm hunting shade.

Thanks all - this is very helpful.

Depending on the weather/finding a climbing partner, I may be into trying to get a route in on Sugarloaf some [early] morning before I die of heat exhaustion.

I'd hook up with a trusted Brazilian climber before heading off the beaten path around there.....

I hope you do get to climb in Brazil while you are there. I have visited Brazil many times for work, but never climbed there other than bouldering. As others have noted, it will be very humid while you are there. You might consider climbing with a guide, although it might be a bit more difficult to find a guide who speaks English well (I assume you do not speak Portuguese). A guide or a trusted Brazilian climber will know the safe areas to climb. You might also want to check on Mountain Project as well as American Alpine Club for recommendations of Brazilian climbers and guides.

Gonna be hot but you'll survive. Me personally I hired a guide (1st time in 30 years) and it was worth every penny

Thanks all - this is SUPER helpful!

I'm imagining that I'll be back to Rio occasionally for work over the next couple of years, so I may end up waiting for better conditions at some other point in the season.

However, I'll check out MP and see if there's anyone on there, and look into hiring a guide for the day.
