Did you not get an award?

Sorry, that was too hard to resist.
I should give up on discussing politics.

It fits hand in glove with celebrity politics. No big mystery.

Our chief executive is a reality TV star, for cryin' out loud.

So stop cryin' out loud, for gosh sakes. You're embarrassing yourself.

If that's the case then Obama should have given one to Samuel L.Jackson because at least he saved us from the muthafukin snakes.

Geez, the Brits have been knighting people like Sir Laurence Olivier for years. Or does he do charitable work like Sir Paul McCartney and Dame Elton John?

Do we have a Sir Mick Jagger yet?

Mouse, as a true patriot, I don't mind a little embarrassment for the sake of our country. But for f*#ks sakes, this is an embarrassment to us all, and shows the world what a bunch of Idiots we really are.
How about people like Libby Sauter instead?

Er, uh, Studly, have you ever looked at the full list of medalists? While it's true that, over time, a few medals have been given to generals and admirales and such, by and large the vast majority have been given out in other categories, so I'm not sure what you're getting on about. Was it a problem for you, for example, when Gerald Ford gave one to Georgia O'Keeffe?

Studly, why did you find it necessary to delete part of the criteria for the awarding of this medal?

Do you find that telling a lie of omission makes you more credible?

It recognizes those people who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors"

Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Cicely Tyson, Robert Redford, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Vin Scully, and then a few token people that deserved it.
Ken M, didn't mean to leave out anything. You go girl, but call me a liar to my face and see how far you get.

Imagine what the social environment was like for LGBT people before Ellen came out publicly and after. As a non-LGBT person, I can't think of anyone who has done more to normalize it. In some ways, I think the courage required to face public ridicule and shame (as well as potentially ending her very lucrative career and dramatically changing her way of life) exceeds the courage required to face death. Many of us are wired in such a way that we would be more willing to risk death than be emotionally vulnerable, exposed to rejection on a world stage. So when you consider her courage in the face of something scary that created opportunities for millions of people, I'd say that is pretty badass. And meritorious.

Who do you think would be more deserving among civilians, Studly, and for what cause?

Our society is somewhat odd in the worshipping of "celebrities" and people in that class who use their fame to propel social change should be lauded rather than ridicule. If there is room for ridicule here, it is for the society that worships famous people. But, maybe that behavior just fills a societal need to find something in common, something to talk about, a shared experience to build bridges of understanding between each other.

How about people like Libby Sauter instead?

Nothing against Libby, but she is a young person, so pretty hard to look at "a lifetime of exceptionalism"

Is she the best American Climber? Has she fundamentally changed how climbing is done, or introduced a new way of climbing that has altered the sport?

Is she the most prolific nurse in destitute regions?
She should be recognized above people who spend ALL their time in service?
Is she at the level of Mother Teresa?

I think of these things as recognizing a lifetime of service, and Libby has a way to go.

I look at the list, and think that these are people who have shaped the American Experience and altered the direction of the country.
