HWY 140, looks like it's blocked pretty well. It was near the Arch Rock entrance near the Dog Fire area.

thanks for the photos. Michaeld, did you stop by slide on your way to Arch entrance? BTW- It is walkable distance from Dog Rock to the entrance. If El Portal residents will give an update of the cleaning the road- it be appreciated.

Yikes!

glad to see the park dodged another bullet...

I would not want to be on the clean up crew though as that is a known rockfall zone that has seen several slides like this.

Alexy , these were all reported this morning and I took these photos from Yosemite Nation's Facebook. Sadly I'm a weekend warrior who dreams about getting out during the week.

Here is another photo from this past weekend in Yosemite though.

News Release Date: January 7, 2016
Highway 140 Closed From Park Line to Junction of El Portal Road/Big Oak Flat Road (Highways 140/120)

A rockfall occurred above the El Portal Road (Highway 140) at approximately 5:45 this morning, Thursday, January 7, 2016. Due to the rockfall, the El Portal Road (Highway 140) is closed from the park boundary in El Portal to the junction of El Portal Road/Big Oak Flat Road (Highways 140/120). The road will remain closed as park crews assess the situation. There is no estimated time for reopening.

The rockfall occurred below the Arch Rock Entrance Station in the area of the Dog Rock Fire, which occurred in October 2014. There were no injuries associated with the rockfall and Yosemite National Park Rangers and road crews are currently assessing the situation.

The Wawona Road (Highway 41) and the Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120 west) remain open with chain restrictions. All roads within Yosemite Valley remain open with chain restrictions as well. Visitors must carry chains in their vehicle when entering a chain control area. Lodging and other facilities in El Portal are accessible.

I started plowing at 6:30am this morning.

By 9:00am the rest of the plow crew still had not shown up yet.

I thought maybe they're all off today the morning after the biggest snowfall storm yet, lol.

By 10:00am I found out why.

The road is closed.

The place this morning was swamped with wet heavy deep snow.

I thought for sure I was going to break the plow again.

But it survived ....

So if the slide originates from a road cut, is it considered in the statistics for "natural" rockfall in the park?

"Where is Bill Stock when you need him?"

Dear Doctor Sprock:

You have a mental block which affects your talk.

You don't mean Bill Stock; you mean Greg Stock.

If he's not in his office, he's maybe here, at his home.
