Does anyone know which version is the first printing? I have seen many copies of the version in the second image, but only a couple of examples of the version in the first image. I have an unread copy, shown in the top image. Were they both printed in 1965? Is my less common version valuable?

Should say inside the first page or two. First edition published by the Mountaineers in 1965. First printing versus second printing?

I've seen your more common one listed by booksellers as the first printing. Not sure if that's correct or not. Maybe the nicer cover was a second printing of the first edition?

I have the plain red cover. I'd be interested in your less common version.

Cheers!

Hey Brian. The book does not have notation as to which printing it is. It does show that it was published in 1965 by the Mountaineers. I found an obscure comment on the two versions earlier that proposed that mine is the first printing of the first edition. This would make sense since a second printing would most likely be produced for the masses after the somewhat unexpected success of a first printing. This would explain why I haven't seen another actual physical copy of the book that I own. This is all just speculation, however.

Rather delightfully arcane discussion here which almost moves me to arise
and cross the room to the bookshelf bearing a copy of the Golden Fleece.
Would it ensure my comfortable retirement or, at the least, a couple of
sixers of Chimay?

Steve Grossman started a thread on this topic back in Apr 2010. I see that you [OP] posted to that thread a few minutes before starting this one.

Why do we need this 2nd thread?

I have a copy of the orange one, with the topo, which is likely the original---but unlikely to be of any value.

Take a look at the contents posted on my thread and see if there is any substantive difference. Your topo cover would be the first or last version logically and I would venture to say the first probably.

Jim Phillips who posts here as 11worth would likely have bought the very first guide as soon as it became available since this is his backyard and should be able to give you the confirmation that you are after on printing order. Valuation is another matter but the first edition first printing is always more valuable than subsequent ones. I spend a lot of time on ebay and I don't think you would fetch very much more for your topo cover version but you never know until you wet your line.

I have both, and aside from those already noted, there are no differences. I'm pretty certain that the more elaborate "topo" cover is the first printing. The publisher couldn't help me, and Fred couldn't remember. I bought my topo-cover version in 1965, the publication year

Thank you everyone for the information and I apologize for the somewhat redundant thread. I wasn't sure if anyone would see my other post and that thread did not have an answer to my question already. Kind of a newbie to actually posting on this forum, though a long-time climber. Thanks again!
