I was heading up Avalanche Gulch on Thursday 6/11 and heard a report of a climbing accident below red bank. I wondered if anyone had any details and if anyone knows how the climber is doing?

Thanks,

Spoke with the rangers today. Apparently a fatality. The man tried to turn around at the red banks at 7:30 AM and his crampon got stuck at his pants and he fell and cartwheeled down the mountain. Was an experienced climber but didn't manage to self-arrest. Slid down 2,000 feet. Apparently the conditions were bad due to recent rainfall freezing over irregularities in the snow making Avalanche Gulch ice-rink like. Scary stuff.

The fact that there have been no responses to your question makes me wonder if there's a better forum to discuss Shasta climbing? Mountainproject seems to be dedicated to climbing on rock only.

Yikes. Climbed avy gulch in 2010, was surprised at the cavalier approach many took on the frozen snow. Watched a guy who didn't have an axe and only instep crampons have one Merrell shoe pop off, then the second and he tomahawked down to the lake. Walked away with massive scraps and cuts but otherwise OK... a scary turn of events. Condolences to those who knew the unfortunate climber.

Yeah, I'd like to know how unusual the conditions were this past week, and whether they're better now.

Wow. Just got back from summiting via Avalanche Gulch today. Didn't know about the accident until now. Despite a little bit of rain last night, the conditions were very good compared to other times I have been up. The snow was a bit hard up around the Red Banks, but nothing unusual and very good for cramponing up or down. That said, there was a lot of questionable behavior from inexperienced climbers...

Maeday, your article about this not being the best time is from 2010...
