It's the most beautiful place in the world and unique experience being up there for most people. It would be nice if we worked to keep it cleaner than it is.

Recently, while spend a few wonderful but rainy and snowy days in the Alcove on Freerider, my partner, David Fay, went spelunking behind the Spire and gathered up a dozen or so water bottles, various slings, cans and general garbage. We policed the Alcove area, adding to the collection, and tied it all up in this plastic sheet he had found.

When we retreated the next day we added more debris to the collection on the way down and deposited the stinking pile into its rightful place, a dumpster.

It wasn't that difficult and didn't really take that much effort. It was about 12-15 pounds of stuff.

It baffles the mind why people would dump trash there.

But then I remember how freaking petrified I was the first time I climbed El Cap. So scared I didn't realize I chipped a tooth until I got back to the ground. So scared I neglected to eat and drink until I bonked so hard I couldn't stack the rope.

I think that fear drives people to do things they would never do elsewhere.

Thanks for doing the clean up. Many thanks.

I can sort of understand being so freaked out that someone needs to get to the top. But what about the top climbers who go up to the Teflon Corner and down in a day? Can't they grab something on the way down?

I don't know that they don't, but there was certainly a lot of easily grabbable garbage up there.

Are people getting generally more disrespectful of our outdoor spaces? Last time I was at Calaveras we gathered 3 large contractors bags of garbage out of the closest cragside camp. My dog is inadvertently trained in cleanup. We let him out and the first thing he does is retrieve every can, bottle, etc in the vicinity. Good job Mark.

rick-- I don't think you can blame climbers (necessarily) for the trash generated at the cal dome camping areas. I would say that 95% of the people out there are non-climbers...

mark hudon-- thank you for your efforts.

I did the nose in October and the only "garbage" I saw was water jugs with water in them.

Thank you Mark & David. Hard to understand why people do the things they do sometimes.

In the first ten years, the annual September Yosemite Facelift retrieved one MILLION pounds of garbage! This will be the 12th year for volunteers including real climbers to help Restore and Retain the Glory of the Yosemite!
Check it out on facebook and the Yosemite Climbing Association website.
