I'm looking for the best method for marking climbing ropes. I'd ideally like to have the year bought, year put into service and things like that on the rope itself. Other than colored tape on the ends, what are your suggestions?

I put tags on the rope bags. Yellow tags are static line, blue are dynamic. Make, Model, size, year bought. With a felt tip pen you can easily cross out 60M and put 54M after your climbing partners chop your best skinny rope in Red Rocks due to rockfall. grrrr.

You wind up with so many damned ropes there's no other easy way. Like, I have a 11.3 that I found on sale which I only use to topropo, a Beal 9.1 x 70 for long and light days, a 10.3 x 60 for normal days.......hmmm, does that sound like a tampax commercial?

At my summer camp we do a single wrap of white electricians tape, write the info on the tape with a sharpie, cover the writing and tape with clear packing tape, then wrap the edges of the packing tape with electricians tape so it doesn't come off. takes up a little less than 2" or rope. Do it to both ends of the rope so if one comes off, it can be replaced without losing the information. We also use different colored electricians tape as the final wrap corresponding to rope length for quickly identifying the correct rope for a particular climbing area.

Melt the end tips slightly enough to make an imprint of a number or letter and then dip the end tip in red or yellow paint to highlight the imprints.

This how we mark all the ropes at Yosar because the ropes have to be logged after every use.

We number them and in the log book it shows the number and all its characteristics/attributes
including date of manufacture and start date of original point of being put in service.

Tape, shrink tubing, sharpies are all inferior methods .....

I cleverly write that info down on the tag that comes with the rope, then I store it in a safe place... and can never find it again!

Werner,

best?? Ya Ya Really? the melted ends crack, split apart and degrade. Was that a 7 or a 1??

I say every method of monitoring takes maintenance expense. Put the time in and you will notice when your reference marker is about to vanish on any of these methods. At this stage-- remark the rope.

Print out a QR code up to 300 characters and put it on the tail of your rope under clear shrink tube. Make it small so it's all visible at once, but if you have a shitty phone camera it won't scan that high.

You can add contact info also.

Apps to create and read QR available for your phone lots of places.

Take a photo of each rope next to the tag and keep the photos

Many institutions purchase ropes in spools and cut at length based upon need. In that case this would not work. I've also seen institutions that buy precut rope in batches and this method would not allow for managing the specific use of individual ropes in the batch since they all look the same.
