Hi all,

There's a fellow climber named Derek Seehausen who's gone missing in SoCal. It has been presumed that he took off following a bout of depression, and his friends and family believe he might be in the wilderness somewhere and possibly suicidal. Please help keep an eye out for him:

Best of luck in the hunt. Hopefully Derek just needed some time to clear the headspace. Wilderness is the best place I know of to do that.

It's been over a year since Derek disappeared. One possibility is that, overwhelmed by the stresses of medical school, he has started a new life somewhere. If so, he may still be pursuing his outdoor and athletic interests, which included rock climbing (bouldering, gym climbing, etc.), hiking, surfing, and tennis.

Here's a link with more pictures of Derek.

His family has said that they respect his right as an adult to make his own decisions, but that they miss him very much and want to know that hes okay.

So if you see someone who looks like Derek at the climbing gym, at Joshua Tree, on the trail, on the beach, or anywhere else, please contact the family at info (at) or at helpusfindderek (at) , or drop me a line.

Weird that he wouldn't contact his family. Something more to the story?
