I have always wondered about kayaking the gorge. I have never been down there so have no idea what it's like. I have kayaked Sespe Creek and Piru Creek and imagine it's of a similar difficulty.
Crazy how fast the water came up. Thanks for posting.

It was over there in the late 80's, early 90's then it moved where it is now. I guess the real name is Outdoor Image but all they sold was Patagonia.

Having the water flowing in the gorge is great. I see plenty of fisherpeople and brown trout as well. It must have been bleak with no water...

Kat... TFPU... its really different now with the year round creek, lots of greenery. Trout and bugs, hard to recall the good old days of the dry ditch.

FRANK.... sorry for your loss

RIP to your friends.

I have always wondered about kayaking the gorge

Probably pretty poor experience unless you like carrying your kayak. I went in June, so I can't speak for peak Spring flow, but to me it looked pretty bushy to experience significant annual increases from when I was there. Come to think of it, does the LAWPD control flow year round from an upstream reservoir?

And because a picture is worth a thousand words:

Cool story Ekat thanks,
Reminded me of when I lived in Coloma 1975 or so and would swim out to a rock on the American, had to time my return to the release at Chili Bar dam. Sorta close call once.
As well, sorry Frank Burns.

Cool story, thanks.

I guess I'm in the minority- I liked it way better when it was dry. After they started releasing the water, the nettle exploded, we lost access to some climbs, some bridges were no longer useable, lots more people (fishermen, not all bad btw), and beavers started cutting down trees. But I haven't been there in years, what do I know? Always liked it there either way. Nervous about an earthquake though.

It's really nice there last time we went - water running, green again, lots of critter sounds...

no flash floods.

I appreciated it both when dry and wet.

The greenery is great, but the nettles I could have done without.

The stark beauty was so unique in the state, plus the ruins, gave it an other worldly quality.

Never did Grey Scale, and after the water flowing, I haven't bothered with it on subsequent trips.

Anyone think the Gorge is climbed out? I used to think all the good rock there was climbed out.

Tremendous story eKat...beats mine all hollow, but I'll tell you anyway....
late '82 or so, my brother & I are fishing on the Norfork River in Arkansas, below a dam, all that jazz. We heard the sirens for the dam, so we left & went to town. Played pool for a while. Returned after several hours thinking the release had occurred already....so we went back to fishing. Well, it hadn't. One second I'm on a rock in the middle of the river, and the next I'm flotsam, way downstream. My brother rescued me with his fly rod, though I broke the tip once. It was fairly sketch. Cost me a good pair of hip boots. They got washed away. I DID manage to hang onto my rod though. Not sure how.
Walking back to his car barefoot sucked a lot, too.
Moving water is a Force to be reckoned with.

Just LADWP's way of letting ya know they don't really want climbers there anyway.
