That sucks! Condolences to family and friends.
Over on the Sierra Challenge thread on summitpost everyone was talking about how amazing she is and how she was destroying all age groups, and then the news of her death came out. Very sad.

hey there say, all.... oh my, my condolences to her family and loved ones, :(

sad to hear, and extra note, as well, as to who we are in the world when things go wrong and death comes to unexpected: as she must have been so full of joy as to trying to reach her goals... :(

Condolences to family and friends of the hiker.

Some information from the summitpost thread for the Sierra Challenge.
http://www.summitpost.org/phpBB3/2013-sierra-challenge-aug-16-25-t64804.html

For those who aren't familiar with the yearly Challenge, in a nutshell - we drive up and down the Eastern Sierra for ten days and climb 1-2 cool peaks each day. Mostly carrying a light daypack, sometimes crampons/axe. It's primarily a hike/scramble event, with little technical rock climbing. It's generally a pretty exhausting day, but most participants would use the word "fun" somewhere in their varying descriptions. This is not a race, there are no official sponsors, and there are no prizes. There are no qualifications to join in the fun - everyone is welcome. The link above will give you all the info.

Unfortunately, events like this are all fun-------until they are not fun.

I helped to organize some mountain-party-climbing events back in the early 1970's in Idaho among an extended group of friends & their friends & their friend's friends.

Luckily the accidents that followed did not result in seriour injuries or deaths.

It's rough out there. We've lost some fine people this season. One moment here, full of life and energy and the next....

For her family and friends perhaps just knowing we care helps a bit.

So sorry.

Life is so very precious and also very fragile. One never knows.
I was shopping with my girls the other day, going in to Sears, and
I suddenly felt very weak. My heart was pounding, and I was very
light headed. My girls looked at me with great concern and asked
if I was ok. I just kept breathing, and it passed. That could have
been it. Then I learned my 93 year old dad was taken in with pain
in his arms and had three stents placed in arteries around his heart,
another one to be placed soon....

That is a terrific pic, The Chief.
And a very triste reminiscence.
May her friends and family find solace for their grief.

Having climbed a few great peaks with Pat this year proved to myself that I could dayhike some torture trips with the best - because she was! Fast and kind on the trail and always a smile. Our last trip was Milestone and Midway in 2 days and what a fantastic accomplishment. I meant to go solo, but kind of wanting company on the long ass 20+ mile approach, I invited the only chick I knew that could handle it in style. She was deeply grateful for the invite and we were successful quicker than I had planned.
Having her claimed forever by the Sierra is so very difficult to believe and accept, but as I have had many close calls on mountains and still managed to get home in relatively one piece - I know I cheated the Sierra "no return" policy and sadly, she was not able to recover from a long fall.
Easily the kindest hearted person I know and obviously loved by so many - the loss of this extraordinary soul is just heart breaking. For all who know and love her, however briefly - I hope for the pain and sorrow to find its proper place within you.
I opted out of the Sierra Challenge this year due to medical issues that she urged me to go to ER for after our last trip. I take some solice in my last msg to her from a hospital bed was "I'll be thinking of you. Luv ya."
An absolute tragic loss ~

I had the pleasure of hiking and meeting Pat twice. She is a wonderful person and an incredible athlete. This is just horrible. My condolences to her family, friends and students.

God, the fragility of life. Yesterday as I pondered my birthday and the years gifted to me I kicked myself for feelings that were not positive.

This gal knew how to live. Tho all of us are not like her, we can live life to the fullest and bless those around us as she did.

Prayers for those left behind. It is an enormous challenge to deal with the death of someone we love.

Peace, Lynne
