Yosemite National Park (CA)
Update On Impacts Of Ferguson Rockslide

The park and its partners continue to deal with the impacts of the Ferguson rockslide, which fell on and closed a portion of Highway 140 through the Sierra National Forest back on April 29th. Highway 140 is one of four routes that serve the park. Managers at the park and at DNC Parks and Resorts at Yosemite, Inc. have altered schedules and setup employee car pools to facilitate the needs of approximately 500 employees who commute from the Midpines and Mariposa areas. The Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System (YARTS) has also modified its schedule and bus routes to assist in transporting commuting employees to work. Temporary housing units and RV campsites have been arranged in and around the park to accommodate those who do not wish to commute the roughly two-and-a-half hours each way to and from work. May visitor use statistics showed an 18% increase, however, indicating that the rockslide is not affecting visitor numbers. This has partially been attributed to the melt from this year’s snow pack, nearly twice its normal depth, which has made for tremendous waterfalls and lush vegetation. An information center has been set up in Mariposa to provide a centralized location for visitors, residents and business owners to obtain information about the rock slide. The information center is staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 209-966-6174 for additional information. The California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) is currently working on an emergency temporary solution. Two bridges are being constructed around the slide, utilizing the historic roadbed on the opposite side of the river. The date for completion of the emergency temporary solution is unknown, but is expected to be before Labor Day. [Submitted by Sheree Peshlakai, Park Ranger]

Caltrans has started to bring in the supplies to build temporary bridges over the Merced. I read in a local paper this past weekend that they hope to have it complete in the next month or so.

Anyone here been over the new bridge? Somewhat inconvenient but it's still gotta be miles (get it?) better than driving around the horn.

Here's to hoping they get bridge #2 up and accessible soon!

The road is now open into the valley for a brief window in the mornings and out of the valley for a brief window in the evenings.

The second bridge is supposed to be done, and Hwy 140 is supposed to be open today during daylight hours.

When I was in Okinawa, I watched an entire battalion of SEABEEs working 6 days a week only build a big parking lot and a tech center. Amazed me.. I think that it was workers protesting the extra workday by not doing anything..

Yes, indeedy. It is open!
We were there at 9:00 am for the ribbon cutting. A lot of hoopla, as one would expect. But, the kids were with us, so we had fun taking photos and riding the school bus over the two bridges and back again--you know photo op and symbolic and all. Historic it is. So, after the ceremony they let traffic through at 11:00, but officially opened the road to the public at 1:00.

Our plans were to go climbing, but our leader didn't make it through the road (for the ceremony), so we got a late start. Did get in one pitch of After Seven, though. I know that is pretty meager for most of you. But for me it was ONE AMAZING FEAT! As I said, the kids were with us (for the day), and I haven't climbed since before the birth of my almost four year old. So, needless to say, it felt great to be climbing again. And WOW! I don't know if I ever appreciated how GORGEOUS the view of the Valley is from 165ft. (?+/-)above the floor.

Back to the road...we drove out at 6:00. I thought they were going to have the traffic lights up, but they weren't on. There was a pilot car instead. but it all went smoothly.

Hours are: 6:00am to 8:00pm (or: OPEN DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS)
disclaimer: atleast as of today

Here's a link to hwy 140 road status: http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/sr140

It was fine last weekend, about a 10 minute delay b/c it's only a one-way road and the escort vehicles are verry slooooww.

Traffic lights are up.

Go buy stuff in Mariposa, have dinner at the Bug, and check out the wrath of Nature.
