The founder of Sports Chalet, Norbert Olberz died Friday. He founded one of the larger sporting goods chains in So Cal that carried mountaineering & rock climbing gear. The La Canada store was its flagship store & set the bar pretty high for other retailers to follow suit.

I used to get all my stuff at Sport Chalet or REI, back before the days of online shopping. They had a pretty good climbing dept...I bought my FISH portaledge from the La Canada store in 1994. RIP Norbert.

Years ago I bought a small amount of their stock. Later that year in with the annual report was a 20% off certificate good for any one trip to the store.

I got one every year since except for once and by now have recovered the cost of the stock and more on the discounts.

I need to make my annual pilgrimage to La Canada here pretty soon.

RIP Norbert. Store 1 & 2 mountain shop & ski shop serf, 1993 ~ 2002 (2003?). Made a lot of good friends from/through there, had a lot of fun, got away with a ton of sh!t that I dont think you can do anymore.
The La Canada stores at that time were well-worn, almost homely. Too buffed and polished for my tastes now (I think the heyday for the climbing shop ended in ~ 1996, and for ski shop in ~ 2006.)

On a related, more tragic note, fellow Chalet alumnus Nicole Anderson was killed in a plane crash last week. RIP Nicole. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/07/two-police-officers-killed-in-plane-crash-mourned.html
