Petzl has issued a Recall for Replacement for all Petzl GRIGRI 2 units with the first five digits of the serial number between 10326 and 11136. Petzl recently became aware that excessive force applied to the lowering handle in the open position can cause internal damage that can disable the GRIGRI 2's assisted braking function. As a precautionary measure, Petzl is asking for the return of all affected GRIGRI 2's, to be replaced with revised versions. To date, seven such damaged GRIGRI 2’s have been reported worldwide, and no incidents as a result of this damage have been reported.

If you have a GRIGRI 2 with a serial number in this range, please stop use immediately and contact Petzl America at 1 (800) 932-2978 (toll free) or grigri2recall@petzl.com to initiate an exchange.

For more information, please visit: http://www.petzl.com/us/outdoor/us/recall-replacement-grigri-2

While the potential risk of an incident due to this issue with the GRIGRI 2 is small, our total commitment to the safety of our users has led us to make this decision. With the summer climbing season just beginning, Petzl understands that this recall comes at an inconvenient time and we are working hard to ensure that everyone receives their replacement GRIGRI 2 as quickly as possible. Everyone at Petzl is committed to resolving this issue. We ask you to accept our sincerest apologies for this inconvenience, and we thank you for your continued support.

Please note that, to ensure we can respond to all questions, Petzl will not be answering questions directly on these forums. We ask that you direct any questions for Petzl on this matter directly to the email address and toll-free number above.

One more reason to wait a year or so before adopting any new fangled widget, just too many run into hitches in the field.

Right now when I click the link posted by the op, I get "page not found."

There is anothe thread on this here:http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1533514/RECALL-Petzl-Grigri-2

This is posted there apparently from Petzl facebook. Does not look like a good thing.

Petzl has discovered that exerting excessive force on the fully extended handle of the GRIGRI 2 can cause internal damage, such that the GRIGRI 2 handle may become stuck in the open position.

When the handle is stuck in this position the assisted braking function is disabled. A damaged GRIGRI 2 in this configuration will function similarly to a manual belay device (e.g. tube style device).

When using a damaged GRIGRI 2 with the handle stuck in the position as shown in Figure 1, failure to control the braking side of the rope will increase the risk of an uncontrolled descent. A GRIGRI 2 with a damaged handle must be immediately retired from service.

It is important to note that failure to control the braking side of the rope is a misuse of the GRIGRI 2 under any circumstance (See GRIGRI 2 Technical Notice - pdf file, 2,5Mo).

11136-10326 = 810.

I thought the whole point of the grigri was...

Petzl makes tons of great stuff. Personally I've never been a big grigri fan, but I have a model 1 and it is very uesful in certain situations. So anyway I hope this gets resolved without any incidents.

Spread the word folks, not everyone sees the web.

What the world really needs is a grigri-type device that works on two ropes. The TRE qualified, but it's no longer in production, so come on Petzl, get on this...

Whether you call or email Petzl, make sure to request a shipping label that will be sent to you via email. I called a rep, received a "RA" number, but was refused free shipping at the UPS Store.

When I called Petzl back while at UPS, they said the way they were trying to handle the shipping was a problem and apologized that the code I was given over the phone wouldn't work.

Just got off the phone with PETZL in Clearfield, Utah. It seems like they're stepping up, doing the right thing, and handling it well. Currently 8-10 min. wait time in the queue to speak with an agent.

11004 here. Finally dug it out of my bag. Just emailed them; it will be interesting to see how long it takes them to respond. Appreciate that they are covering things.

I also have a 11004, I guess this involves a lot more units than just the difference between the 5 digit numbers (edit I read elsewhere that 11004 probably equals manufactured on 4th day of 2011). I also noticed as of right now, some of the large online retailers don't even show a grigri2 for sale or backorder on their respective websites (REI, Mountaingear). Hmmm.

It looks like a recall of every grigri2 made from around last Thanksgiving through May 16, 2011. That's gotta hurt.

I love my Cinch! I've used mine for about 5 years. It comes in particularly handy for me when I belay from above--evens out the weight difference between me and my boyfriend when I belay off of a power point. I've never owned a grigri and thought I should have one in my bag of tricks. I'll give it another chance when I get the replacement.

I haven't received a reply from Petzl either. I got my grigri 2 through the retailer that I dare not speak it's name around here. I think I will try contacting them and exercise that avenue.

Emails don't sound like they're going through on the return. I called after not getting a return email and they already had me in the system.

The serial # range listed is just the first 5 digits that indicate the year and date of manufacture. First 2 digits are the YEAR (10=2010, 11=2011 etc) and the next 3 digits are the DAY OF THE YEAR. So,
My GG2 has #11004 as the first 5 digits. So it was made January 4th, 2011. A lot of manufacturers use this system.

They're recalling EVERYONE made in that entire date range which I suspect is pretty much EVERY one. OUCH
