Does the Taco just have a disproportionate number of conspiracy buffs?

Or is this a recent and growing trend experienced here and elsewhere, fed by the interweb's easy access to misinformation?

Or has this always been around?

Seems that every other thread is about some bogeyman's attempt to destroy humanity. Considering that world pop continues to grow at a steady clip, the bogeyman really isn't very good at killing people.

I'm not out to start a hate thread, but it is a bit startling to see so much of it.

The original meaning of conspiracy is an attempt to "cover up" a mistake.

So if there are so many conspiracy theories out there, how many mistakes do we have?

Perhaps we should conspire about those pesky conspiracies!

If we told you the answer, the aliens in the ark on the backside of the Moon (including Barack Obama - the whole Kenyan thing is a diversion) would spray chemtrails in the sky to alter you, put fluoride in your water, give you vaccinations, make you worship their god, cause you to vote Democrat and admire Canada, and be able to get health insurance. All directed by the illuminati new world order, from a grassy knoll in Area 51. And you wouldn't want that, now would you?

I'm guilty of not only reading those threads but occasionally taking the bait, posting to them and thereby bumping the threads and adding to the total number of responses. Of course if we ignored them, they would go away. The self-bumping would not be enough to sustain them. I'd do my part of doing nothing in the future.

The conspiracy threads are generated by artificial "intelligence" software and are autoposted by bots running on compromised supermarket checkout machines. You can do your part to limit the spread of these threads by purchasing all your food at the local farmers' market.

stop making stuff up. "conspire" comes latin for "breath together". conspiracy involves planning something, hidden from authority. you don't cover it up until you do it.

fyi, the term "conspiracy theory" didn't appear in our common vocabulary until after the kennedy assassination, which inspired whole rafts of conspiracy theorists, including annual conventions of assassination theory buffs. public surveys nowadays generally find a majority of americans believe that john kennedy was not shot by lee harvey oswald. the wikipedia article will not tell you that he was.

There are several varieties of conspiracy theorists: those who honestly believe that there is something wrong with America, and consiracy theorists "for profit." The latter group includes Gary North, who fanned the flames of the Y2K theory in order to sell precious metals, food storage supplies, gas masks, etc. and got rich doing it!

Even though most rational people "didn't buy in" to the Y2K deal, lots of people still bought extra food and some silver as a "cheap insurance policy."

It's all based on paranoia. And as others have said: "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're' not out to get you." ;>)

Conspiracy theories are the response of powerless people to their predicament. By speculating about how they're getting shafted they manage the illusion that they have some control over their lives.
