Nice. This will be an excellent companion to the new guidebooks David and I have been working on for two years. The Sedona one should be out in the next month or two.

Is there a search function I'm missing? Somewhere I could type in say 'crown king' or 'solitude'?

Just pulling your chain John, but it was sort of ironic to bring this up on my iPod Touch and have it tell me the video is in Flash... which won't play on the Touch or iPhone. :-)

Jbrah: Did you mean Isolation instead of Solitude?

Hi Steel Monkey-

Yes, that's why I posted the YouTube video as well (should work on the iPhone):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0XhajZCBNM
(the Flash link is better quality, though).

Jay, I haven't implemented a search feature. In Arizona, it should be easy to hunt down an area by location, but still, I'll work on a search function for the next update.

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciated.

cheers

John - you're an iPhone developer now on top of all your past accomplishments. Very nicely done, no moss growing on you...

Cool, John.

Does it show your current location with the iPhone GPS, which might help in showing which crags are close and maybe help with navigating to them?

Hi Clint-

The app does show your current location. SInce most of the crags are off road, the Google route finder wouldn't give good directions, but Tim's directions for each crag (in the Details section of the App) are good. Between Tim's directions and the aerial view maps in the App, you should be able to navigate to each area pretty easily.

Rock ‘N Road™ Arizona iPhone Application 2010

We welcome rock climbers both the new and the wise, and non-climbers alike to check out the Rock ‘N Road™ Arizona iPhone Application 2010.

Hope all will enjoy what John Middendorf has beautifully engineered and Tim Toula sweated putting down on paper and into many crashed computers in one of his oily-motored clunkers or another for over 30 years.

I met John the very first time back in the Precambrian, right after the granite had cooled down enough to climb…maybe the early 1980s… while offering him a spot while he was high up on a problem on the Camp 4 Boulder. Since then, I admired his work with the A5 Big Wall line and always thought his and Xavier Bongard’s establishment of the Grand Voyage route is still one of the greatest accomplishments in rock climbing.

Never would our imaginations allow then, while standing under a Yosemite boulder with my arms up in the air, we’d team up so many moons later to make a rock climbing production for some amazingly teched-out telephone (that I still don’t even own), when at the time we were still having to walk to the store to use a 10 cent payphone. The power of the world works in circles Black Elk wrote…and there is something marvelous in that.

John, Tim, and friends have been roaming the countryside, climbing at lots of areas, many before they have been developed, and putting up new routes along the way. The Rock ‘N Road work has had many applications with two editions of the book, website, posters and now it has come in a new form on the iPhone.

We invite you to take a look at Rock ‘N Road™ Arizona iPhone Features

• Easy iPhone Access
• Google Earth Mapping of 168 Arizona Rock Climbing Areas
• Detailed Directions
• Climbing Area Descriptions
• Classic Climbs
• The Price is Right

To DEMO the Rock 'N Road™ Arizona iPhone App in action (2 minute video):
http://www.deuce4.net/Web/RockNRoadAZ
or, on the iPhone through YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0XhajZCBNM

To PURCHASE the Rock 'N Road™ Arizona iPhone App through the iTunes store: http://itunes.apple.com/app/rock-n-road-arizona/id365218458?mt=8

One can also SEARCH for "climbing Arizona" on the iPhone,
and Rock N' Road™ Arizona will come up as the main choice!

It’s been a lot of fun (not that much fun though, and sometimes, really just too much hard work) to get this all together.

Still, if you simmer slowly, you come up with a good stew. We hope you enjoy the flavor and get a chance to taste Arizona for yourself somewhere along the road. May we meet there as well as in cyberspace!

See ya soon,
