You do realize that the Taiwan quake is one week and only 600 miles
separated from the 7.0 Okinawa event.

Hey California...

Get ready to RUMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Party in Parkfield!!!!!!!!!

It IS the world's shakiest city after all = I've been there.

As for temblors in Cragman Country - I hear tell that it's just the settling of 16,500 square feet of log and concrete that's bulging the poor earth up June Lake way.

Well, whatever happens...yo Cali climbers are welcome here at mi casa. It's out in the country with not much to fall on yo. If you are stricken with any type of loss at least there's some land to pitch a tent on....and then we all pitch in together. Ya !?

The earthquake in Chile followed the Okinawa quake almost exactly 24 hours later. It will be interesting to see if the Taiwan quake is followed on the Pacific side with a similar time lag.

My Momma hits harder than that.

I predict a Mag 7 California event within 5 years.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/sca/ca_eqs.php

Since 1900 there have been 17 mag 7.0 or greater earthquakes in California / Baja California / Nevada. So the odds of there being one in the next 5 years are actually close to even, even if it's perfectly random. Many of these big Cali earthquakes have been fairly harmless because they have occurred in places with few people. (Plus other things like the type of earthquake, nature of the shaking, type of soil on which the people live, and so on.) It is natural to notice patterns, but sometimes they don't mean anything.

Good news is that we've been getting a lot of small stress relievers.

No, not really. To avoid a M7 on a given fault (say, the Hayward fault), we would need to experience 30! M6 on that fault. Or 900 M5s. Or 27000 M4s... or 810,000 M3s.

We haven't had enough small EQs to cover the large EQs.

Check this out: In 100 years, THREE earthquakes (1960 Chile, 1964 Alaska, and 2004 Sumatra) accounted for HALF of all energy release from ALL earthquakes in 100 years.
