I was blown away when I heard the details of the proposed assignment. "The Sierra Club does THAT?" I asked.

Before long I was driving to Courtright Reservoir to spend a few days in the back country with veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and adventure writer Daniel Duane.

The article was funded by the Sierra Club's Military Families Outdoors program, which connects service members and their families with our natural heritage. If you or someone you know is a vet, I encourage you to check out this program, specifically the Veterans Expeditions at Outward Bound at the bottom link below.

Once again you're on it Jerry. Best shot of Courtright reservoir, ever. Obviously got inspired by the company. And the rock. I used to come up to Dogtooth Peak, way in the back there, from the other side as a teenage Boy Scout leader. We'd go crystal hunting for geodes of smoky quartz, and from the top we could barely tell the lake was there, and looked right over the heads of those gorgeous granite domes. The Sierra was a lot bigger then, a lot wilder.

Thanks for sharing Doug. I didn't get to climb much but was definitely inspired. Right after the shoot I headed to Bishop to facilitate a photo workshop. The difference between these two vastly contrasting slices of the American perspective was profound.

Lots of interesting rock in them hills...

I just read the magazine last evening. I saw the article and started reading it. Then I flashed back to the credits, ... and there you were. I called Vic over and she was impressed too. Excellent work for a good cause.

Nice work, Jerry! This world definitely needs more peeps like you.

(That photo of "wet-n-sloppy in God's Country" was hysterical...especially followed by the postcard shot.)

Jerry, question for you. What are you protecting your camera with in crappy wet weather ? I am assuming you are lugging around full size dslr. Umbrella or ... ?

Looks like a spectacular setting. Way cool place and good of the Sierra Club to work with Vets.

Can't wait to rent a Class AAA motor home and tool up there.

Thanks guys. Bruce, I should be better about protecting my gear. I was just sorta keeping it inside my jacket, pulling it out to snap a couple shots, protected by my hand, then putting it away. My Nikon is pretty well weather sealed, but I've definitely ruined a few bodies over the years.

Those guys could eat!

The guy holding the blue bowl here is SuperTopo's own Hoots, who was leading one of the groups for OB. The instructors are gifted people who directed the trip and conversations with thoughtfulness and respect. Class acts! Hoots has been down in Patagonia for a while. Perhaps he'll chime in here. Meanwhile I'll give him major props for doing this wonderful, important work.

Nice photos Jerry! I am really glad you posted some more up here, there could have been a few more in the article itself.

One more bump for this program. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I signed up to work the first course, and it turned out to be a fantastic learning experience for everyone involved. These men and women really opened my eyes up to what Veterans have to cope with and carry with them every day, and they gave each other great insight into how to safely and effectively deal with these stresses. I couldnīt imagine a better classroom than the Sierras after a fall snowstorm.

So again, tell all your Vet friends, this program wonīt be around for ever, and it is too good of a deal to pass up!

Hey Hoots,
Thanks for chiming in. You guys did an amazing job teaching these guys...

how to set up a tent...

how to light a stove...

how to navigate...

and most importantly, how to sh#t in the woods...

Did you guys finally get to do some climbing after the storm?

Nice job Jerry and Hoots!

I just re-upped for two more Vets courses next summer- those guys are fun to work with out there. Props to the Sierra Club for getting the funding together. I'm glad to be a part of this.
