I must admit I don't remember seeing these sliders before. I have asked Stéphane for a full story but in the meantime, anyone know a bit of history on these?
The are marked "ANDE" and are made in Italy.

They work. Slider nuts can be cool.
Some folks find them hard to clean.

I have used the LoweBall sliders alot for clean aid and they are great, but yes they are hard to clean once weighted. Those things look even burlier and possibly easier to clean because they don't have the soft brass or copper 'ball'.

Cap'n... yep, I have (and have used) several different types of sliders (I love Lowe Balls) but I had never seen these before. Trying to see what people know about them.

Right on. I've got some assorted ones, too.None like those, though.
Apparently there were many.
Good luck! (really)

Hmmm, interesting. Sort of works the reverse of a Loweball. Wouldn't mind seeing a side view and the other side of one...

(hey hoipolloi - funny line)
i like the design of those sliders in the OP more than the (er, Metolius?) variant i used BITD -- before teeny aliens and their kin pushed them off my rack.
took my longest whipper ever when i zippered out two early version spring loaded slider nuts (and a wired stopper) while trying a FFA on crack that proved too thin for even my skinny fingertips. genuine 70 footer - friends and i have since measured it (on route and in a photo of me just a moment before i flew).
fortunately it was steep enough that there was nothing but air under me -- though when i finally shot back up and into the rock, i got rather smooshed (and _such_ a wedgie).
i kinda remember they were metolius - but not entirely sure. who else made such stuff circa summer of '87.
what finally kept me from cratering was an old school big stopper on perlon. amen. i caught much heat from friends who tried the line later, as that stopper was posolutely welded into the one spot you could get a full knuckle into for quite a ways. long after i finally went back, rapped down, and got that fat mashie out (with a hammer and cold chisel).
never did try to finish the line. years later it finally went at 13a -- so just as well.
~~~
well, that digression rather got away from me. oopsy.
anyway, i kinda like the design of those Andes slider nuts, at least as they appear in the photo above. though not so sure about the "meat tenderizer" touch -- seems likely to keep it in place against just rope drag -- then smoosh and fail when really loaded by a long one.
but who knows, an engineer i am most certainly knott. more a test pilot...
healyje/Joseph... I will take some more pics tomorrow (once my midnight deadline clears on the Yabo thread) with my tripod so I can zoom in a bit better. Perhaps Stéphane will have an answer or two for me by then.
I don't know about the design. I think you need both halves of a slider nut to expand (have some taper) for them to be really effective. The design of these things look like the moveable piece just provides a flat surface for the tapered part to move. That's basically how a regular stopper works.
I think the Italians got it wrong on this one.
Bruce
ps- having said all that, it would be nice to see a photo to see if the sliding piece has some sort of taper. From the photos provided it looks like it does not.
Bruce,
The sliding part DOES have a "chunky" taper. I will shoot pics this AM and post.
