So I was just about to write some comments on this when I realized: "What is this even about?" I read through a few Park Service documents but still couldn't really get at the essence of it. So I asked some friends in the know and here is the summary:

This is the first step in a long process. It is the the "brainstorming phase" where the public gets to make suggestions that the Park Service then needs to consider at the next stages down the road. Many Many Stages.

At this point, it is not about how many people write in and "vote" for a certain outcome. Its more about raising issues that are important. So there is no point in unifying around one or two important things. Its more about brainstorming what you think the Park should consider.

This point I am a little hazy on but ill try: this "Merced River Plan" is actually part of the bigger Valley plan. I don't know exactly how all these plans work together. But the take away message is this is important. Its NOT just about whether you activity involves being in the Merced River.

So, as Ken says, click on the link and brainstorm away. What should the park consider? Should there be more camping and less development? Should there be more river access to boaters? What do you think of the Half Dome permit system? What do you want the valley experience to be over the next century? Its all fair game to toss out there, at this point.

thanks Chris, for clearing that up..

I was looking for "what's this all about..?" as well.. couldn't find it, but your explanation seems to fit...

thanks again, also Ken for bring this to our attention..

Yes to allowing visitors/campers/climbers...

no to development of the consession areas...

less expensive hotels, yes to more campgrounds...

For Chris - basejumpers should be allowed to land where ever they can after being allowed to jump from El Cap or Half Dome!!!

Cheers
