nice pics

those "bd spinner leashes" seem to be pretty popular. anyone using them? any thoughts? I may take off my wrist leashes this year and thinking about other options

The spinner leashes are ok. they do give me a bit of resistance at the very end of my swing. I think they are a bit overkill and unescesary on 1 pitch routes. They are basically to prevent you from dropping your tool, but how often does that really happen?

Cool photos. I look like a grinning idiot, but I guess that is a good thing.

Ha!!

Why toy with a poor guy who has been hanging around with nobody but dirtbag male climbers for three weeks?

But that does make me feel a bit better.

Yum! Thanks for the pix of picks--I'm dreaming ice dreams now!

BTW I heard a couple years ago that Roadside formation at June Lake was closed to climbing. Is that still the case?

The roadside was fat on Sunday -

Justin toproping it

A little v-thread practice

btw We were a little amazed to see ice skaters out on June Lake. Yesterday I decided to head down to the beach and take a closer look.

Who should pull up just as I got out of the car but Doug Nidever ! He got some ice skates and a hockey stick out of his truck and headed out .. but not before inviting me to walk out on the ice and look around.

Here's one of his 22cm (~8 inch) ice screws -

Ice depth about 7 inches

Ice was so clear in places you could see the bottom

Strangely, I'd never actually seen people skating on a frozen lake before. It was amazing to me to hear the sounds of the ice .. it was a little like whale song.

Wow! Never seen the roadside ice anywhere near that fat. Too bad the little woman is no longer up for some ice.

Trying to spend my brithday climbing ICE. I recently moved to the Bay Area and I am itching for some ice. I am looking for a partner to drive with me over to the east side this weekend. Don't know the area all that well and I hoping that some crusty, old, and preferably mean jaded climber will want to swap rope gun skills for local beta and good stories.

thanks,

Em, I heard you were coming up today and then took sick. Sorry to hear that. Hope you are feeling better, and back into the swing of things, very soon.

(sounds of coughing, weeping and gnashing of teeth)

Cragman, so sorry to miss the fun today, and to miss meeting you. Even more sorry to hear of the rain because I'm on the mend and was planning to come over Monday to try Horsetail. From the look of today's photos it may not last...wahhhhhhhh!

that frozen lake stuff can be intoxicating. answered a plea on a ride board in jackson one time. had an extra pair of skates and big fat socks. suggested a tour as we crossed the wind river.

got a notion to drag out a tent fly and string it up between us. great fun jumping the cracks and flat out screaming downwind, coordinated slalom turns and such, a touch of crack the whip like ekat mentioned.

big smoker this gal. tied one end to my daysack and towed her straight upwind, missing the chance for an early dinner. her hood was all puckered up like the kid on south park.

i'm reminded of my deficiency whenever i see the thighs on those speed skaters

thats a damn nice looking icefall. i'll be out for some this weekend, but its all way way steep, which is fun, but just kills ya after awhile. it would be such a riot to have something long and moderate like that to just enjoy.

Great pix Cragman, thanks! And cool to meet you in the "real"

Ed, I believe the bend comes not from climbing hard but from the carbon fiber melting in the hot California sun.
