Overview
The memorial boulder’s pretty funny. It’s practically in the middle of town, and it’s got a gazebo built right on top of it, with another little boulder fenced in inside it. It’s kind of like a baby boulder in its crib – or maybe it’s jailed so it can’t get out and roll downtown for a beer. Whatever. It’s a glacial erratic, deposited on top of the other boulder when some ancient slab of ice gave up the ghost and turned into the Truckee River. A local told me you used to be able to roll it around up there, but now there are shims under it – gotta keep these things under control, you know! The problems are pretty good, making this more than just a novelty. Unfortunately, the boulder is steadily getting shorter as the Veteran’s Hall keeps repaving their parking lot. We should get them to excavate a little instead.
