Trip Report
Knucklehead father + Amazing daughter + Tuolumne = PURE BLISS!!!
Thursday August 9, 2012 6:43pm
This sport, which we are all passionate about, has been a part of my life for over 38 years now. To be perfectly honest, climbing has ALWAYS done it for me. I tried numerous other adventure sports...none of which came close.

With everything going on in life, however, climbing is more in the background in my life now, even though I still climb regularly. It just isn't quite the need for me, like it has been in the past.

Today was one of those days that brought back SO many memories, and reminded me what is truly at the heart of climbing for me now...sharing it with my family.

My daughter Micah (18), just returned a week ago from a two month stint working at our orphanage in Ecuador. Micah is an adventurer at heart, and THE funnest person I have ever traveled with....especially to Third World nations.

Now she is off once again next week, moving to Ventura to begin college, studying to be a Pediactric Nurse. Before she returned from Ecuador, and during one of our Skype conversations, she told me in no uncertain terms, that before she left for school, we were gonna have to hit Tuolumne Meadows.

We wolfed down dinner last night, then drove up to the Meadows and 'invited' ourselves into a campsite with a young man traveling to the Bay Area while repping for a mountain bike company. (We bribed him with firewood, ice cream, cash, and stimulating converation :) Had a great time!

Up early, Micah and I fired down our oatmeal and headed for Mariuolumne Dome, for a date with the Euro Trash/Hobbit Book link-up.

Euro trash is a fine 4 pitch face route, with just a bit of 5.9 on the last pitch, and ascends the grey/white wall between the trees in the pic below....and offers a diretissima to the ramp leading to Hobbit Book....

Perfect weather....74F and we were in the shade the whole time!

Some cloud build-up began about halfway up Hobbit, but we fired up and had no weather issues.

In the sun it was bloody warm....surprisingly, we never saw another party come up on the route. When we came down, there were three parties on Oz.

This looks perfect. I showed this to my daughters (13 and 9) as an example of what to strive for some day. Looks sustained with some exposure, but not overwhelmingly difficult. Thanks Dean! We're headed to TM starting tomorrow for our annual family pilgrimage.

Honestly Dean I dunno how ya do it. It scared the crap out of me to have my two beasts at the crag when they were little. I always envisioned them hurling themselves from the cliff top yelling MUMMY, CATCH ME!!!! which was something they did with frequency at the playground from the top rails of the monkey bars.

I really admire those of you who were able to successfully teach yer kids to climb and not have a thrombo in the doing. I've talked to one Dad, I'll leave him unnamed c'os you all know him and his son is doing some great big climbing. Anyway, he sez he and his wife just cross their fingers everytime junior buggers off to some new destination. Then again, one of mine is in military service. So I can shut up about being nervous about the safety of my son. At least climbers - for the most part-hold their lives in their own hands.

I think it's great to do ANY kind of stuff with yer kids. I really enjoy havin'em around although they could do more to tidy up after themselves. :-D

Nice words, Tami...thanks.

We have always taught our kids to follow THEIR passions. As a Dad and a climber, of course I always wanted to share that with them, but never wanted to thrust it on them.

All of my kids climb, but Micah is PASSIONATE about it, kinda the way I was as a kid of 13 when I began.

Admittedly, when I climb with them, especially on multi-pitch/multi-day stuff, there is an added sense of concern and anxiety. However, I just try to turn that into energy that I can exude back to them, and it seems to excite them even more about the experience.

Bottom line....we raise our kids to chase their dreams, whatever those might be, and wherever that takes them.

Cheers,
DR

Awesome TR! Makes me wish I was up there and not down here in 112 degrees lol.

Very cool that your daughter shares your passion for the rock - that's a rare thing these days. Seems like most kids want to do the exact opposite of what their parents do, all the time. So it's a real treat when folks here post up their family outings.
