Bob & Vic's Excellent Nepal Adventure (Kathmandu & Khumbu Trek)

In Oct-Nov, 2012 I spent 3 weeks in Nepal with Bob Devany. I posted a few photos here and a vimeo link. The 15-minute video contains photos and several short videos recorded in Kathmandu and during our 20-day trek in the Khumbu Region. The trek began in Lukla and included Namche Bazaar, Chhukhung, Chhukhung Ri, Gorak Shep, Mt Everest Base Camp, and Kala Pattar. We crossed over Cho La Pass to Gokyo and Gokyo Ri and then over Renjo La Pass back to Namche Bazaar via the Thame Valley. The total distance, including side trips, was about 100 miles. We spent 10 days above 4,500 meters. Bob Devany was the trek leader and Milan Rai was our Nepalese guide. My son Sascha did the film and music editing.

BTW, how high is Kala Patar? Gorak Shep? and Gokyo ri? And I recall another Kala Patar above Gokyo, do you know its elevation? I've been trying to remember for 28 years now.

The "Kala Patthar" above Gokyo is Gokyo Ri = 5,360 m

Kala Patthar = 5,540 m

Chhukhung Ri = 5,404 m

Gorak Shep = 4,830 m

Everest Base Camp = 5,364 m

Cho La Pass = 5,330 m

Renjo La Pass = 5,340 m

sheepdog: most of the photos were taken with a Cannon Rebel XS 1000. the photo of our guide on the Ngozumpa glacier was taken with a Cannon Power Shot A1200. Sunset photo of the Nuptse-Lhotse massif was post processed using Photomatix. All the video clips were taken with the Power Shot.

Nice TR and Photos!!!

When I was at Gokyo, we woke up, the owner of the Teahouse had gotten so drunk, his feet were sticking out of the kitchen. Nearly frozen to death. We had to climb without Breakfast. It's only 2 hours to summit from the village. We later ran into his wife down near the lakes, she was hurrying up from K-du. Teh lulz.

Riley: ours was a variation on the 3 passes trek. Did you do the 3 passes?

Thanks for bringing back a lot of good memories!

As a an anthropologist specializing in Sherpas, I really enjoyed your photos, trip report and video.

The choice of music on the video was fun and interesting. Hindu music was played during the Hindu scenes and Buddhist music during the Buddhist scenes and hardly anybody ever gets that right. The jazz riffs as you were climbing the passes fit well too, I could almost feel a high altitude headache coming on !

For the next two weeks I will be on a similar trek to Phortse for the year 10th anniversary graduation ceremony of the Khumbu Climbing Center on the 1st of February. I'll then revisit the three Extreme Ice Survey time-lapse cameras to switch out the cards and maintain the units. Kathmandu has worse winter air than Salt Lake and I'm psyched to hike.
