RD was charming, generous, and very photogenic. His
friendships spanned generations of very famous climbers.
Here
is a photo I took of him in the summer of 1999 at an event
at the MountainLight studio. He was talking with Allen Steck
and a very thin Conrad Anker, who had just returned from
the north face of Everest and his discovery of Mallory's
remains.
