Every country with a road and/or a military is socialist?

Excellent question, Chaz...all countries have varying degrees of programs, facilities or institutions that benefit the society as a whole- these are generally referred to as 'socialized functions'.
So how many of these elements does a country have to adopt before they are considered a true Socialist country?
I recently asked fattrad if this country is currently predominantly capitalist or something else. His opinion is that the US is still largely a capitalist country.
I then asked him (or anybody else) if implementing healthcare reform included a Public Option, would this be the tipping point at which we became a true Socialist Country.
No answer from fattrad on that one. What do you think? jdf? Anybody else?

The subject at the moment is whether the US is currently a Socialist country, or if a Public Option Healthcare Plan would officially make us a true Socialist Country. What do you think, Skip?

I posed that question at a time when the right-media was shrieking about how we are a Socialist Country due to Obama's healthcare reform efforts. What most people either don't understand or ignore for the purposes of their political agenda is that we have numerous socialized functions in this country right now- even without healthcare reform- so what is it about this initiative that seems to push us past the tipping point? Or does it?

If I correctly understand the underlying inference, you are referring to the healthcare plan(s) that is before Congress right now that includes a forced mandate with fines for non-compliance, and is based on insurance being provided by the current insurance industry. If so, I absolutely agree- these plans simply wrap all of us around the fingers of the insurance industry even more tightly than we were to start. I'm not so sure I'd call it fascism, but this certainly sounds every bit as controlling.
