Was SPCA/Stoney Point Climbing Association ever more than an in-joke? John B once mentioned it to me by those initials.

One of the Stonemaster threads suggests it was unofficial: http://www.supertopo.com/climbing/thread.php?topic_id=150211&msg=151803#msg151803 Still, climbing there has been happening for long enough that perhaps at some point in the past...

Is it safe to climb at Stoney today?

We've been getting a little rain here and there in NoHo, but I don't know what the weathers been like in Chatsworth.

I see that there are a lot of bolts without hangers at Stoney Point. Does anyone know what Size they are so I can bring my own equipment (hangers and nuts).

Should I buy 3/8, 1/2, 10mm, 12mm, or 14mm?

The naked bolts were on top of a couple routes. I only remember two to routes specifically. They are found on Then Main Wall, The main Chimney 5.6 and Mozart's Wall for Amadeus 5.10a and Amadeus II 5.10a.

Dances... yes it is dry... intill it starts raining.

Curt has the names and dates pretty well as I recall.

Where A16 is now... Reseda/ventura, ish. Has been a climbing shop, under different names, forever.

Who remembers SPORTS LTD. ? on Ventura Blvd, Woodland Hills?

I blew a bundle in that place. I remember Eiger Ovals... 20 ea for $40.00, EB's $25 and the Eldered (sp) rope... $120!!!...used that cord for a long time... That one got stretched about 20 extra feet at ARCH ROCK, when Bullwinkle took a flyer. I decided to toss it into a dumpster in C4, someone dug it out and loaned it to the PO FA boys who used it for hauling and fixing??!!!.

And the SPCA is NO JOKE.... that secret society stills rules with a iron fist. They decide what BOLTS STAY and witch ones go. The meetings are held in secret and the ruling board members attend the meetings in costume and do not know the other board members. Ask JW35... he/she is the President and dictator for life.

EDIT:

Should I buy 3/8, 1/2, 10mm, 12mm, or 14mm?

You need all.... ;>)

I bought my first backpack there, or rather my mother did. Was a Mountain Master external-frame. I couldn't make it feel right so we took it back and got a Camp Trails. That would have been about 1965 when I was 13.

Just for the record; It may have been the Spring of 1973 I quit working at Mtn Life in San Jose and was riding my bicycle to LA and got into a minor accident and had to hitch a ride south. First place I went was the Reseda Mtn Store. I was sitting in the back of the Store with a one of the guys that worked there - Wiemesfelder (spelling?)and watched people coming into the store looking to buy things but there was nothing to buy. It was a pathetic scene. Wiemesfelder told me Dr. Jones would give the store to anybody that would take it. I heard Westridge would not even touch it. At first I told Tom Turntine from Los Gatos about that and was going to go in on it with him and Dr. Jones, but that fell through and it became just me and Dr. Jones. I put in $3,000.00 and Jones matched it. The place was $40,000.00 in debt with no inventory. My connection with Tom Hendricks and his connections with The North Face quickly had me stocking the Mtn Store with Lowa Boots and North Face gear. I got it out of debt in a year of hard work. I think I worked too hard and got tired of it, but because my original plan after leaving Mtn Life was to cross-country ski race, I gave the store away to Greg Bender. I took my $3,000 investment and a bit more (certainly not enough to make my year of labor worth while) and went to Idaho. Rumor has it that I must have left the store in bad shape since I gave it away. In actuality, the store was doing very well and giving it away was about the dumbest thing I ever did, and I seemed to have gotten the rap for it going downhill again. I was a bit depressed about it for a number of years. I have no idea of what happened to it after I left. It sounds like ( from reading this thread ) Jim Thomsen ended up with it again a number of years later? That's poetic justice since the Thomsens had put so much into it before I ever showed up, and I almost felt like me and Jones stole their share! I left to ski race and had some anti-materialism thing going on in my head but eventually got into making packs myself in Idaho, but that was after starting the Old Boise Bootworks with Ken Horwitz and leaving that.

Oops! It's Thomsen - no P and there's an E. I'll edit what I wrote above. That's Greg and Jim Thomsen of Wilderness Experience.

It's snowing in Seattle today - just started at 9:30 AM. Maybe I'll go do my buildering workout in full conditions! Should be bewildering.

Wow, fun to read about the valley stores. And great to hear from you McHale....we had some great times!
The stories about the Tarzana Mountain Store are pretty much accurate. Greg and I started Wilderness Experience in the back room. I had worked for Kelty in Glendale in the late 60's and was the one who aDded the climbing section in 1968. They opened a store in Northridge that Greg and I bought sometime around 78 or so. Curt's right, very original name. We were going to name it The Mountain Store after the Tarzana shop but decided to be very original and call it the Mountain Shop.
Curt's story about Laurie's store is accurate. After it closed I lost touch with Laurie and never heard anything about her or from her....until a month ago. She is in Army Intelligence and has served 2 tours in Iraq and 2 in Afghanistan.
Fun to think about all those great times we had...and thanks to mad dog for telling me about this post. Right now I'm in Australia on my sailboat Tenaya. Later this year we will head for Indonesia and Africa..

Did Stoney get any rain from this last storm that blew thru? Tempted to get out there on Sat. if it stayed dry. If not, the garage needs cleaning...
