Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent. Her eager body quivers. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Aww man! Nature, I do not know what to say; my dogs have always been good friends. I have always felt it is not right that they have such a short life relative to ours. I enjoyed scratching Summit's ear at Todd's house for the Tarbuster thing. She brought me some comfort; I hope I was able to give some back.

So this is where we part, my friend,
And you'll run on, around the bend.
Gone from sight, but not from mind.
New pleasures there you'll find.
I will go on. I'll find the strength.
Life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave.
Share one last look, before I grieve.
There are others, that much is true.
But they be they, and they aren't you.
And I fair, impartial, or so I thought,
Will remember well all you've taught.
Your place I'll hold, you will be missed.
The fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
Take with you this. . .I loved you best.

Dear Doug
I'm so sorry for your (and all of our's) loss.
Be well, we're all thinking of you.

Oh, Nature. You're sweet Summit is gone on. I was thinking about her this afternoon, and you of course, in this sad time.

You showed her so much love, and she sure was a special dog. It has been a year of great loss for all in the climbing community and for those of us who knew Summit, and know you, even for those who only know you two from here, the sadness is immense.

hey there nature, say, i am so sad for you now, about the loss of your sweet dog...

i have been through some sad losses, beyond my control, and two, due to me being to trusting of someone that "pretended to take care" as i did over my dogs---but hurt us...

sometimes it seems one has a rough time getting over these losses, being that our dogs were so loyal and faithfully dear...

may you be comforted in this loss, from all your dear friends, and by the comfort of knowing that you gave all the very same love your sweet dog gave to you... and may the good lord help dry the tears, as well, and help you smile again, through new treasures that come your way...

you did your very sweet best, too, as you helped her pass on--she felt your hug...

what better gentleness could have been hers... ?

none...
none but her owners hand, there for her when she needed it...
you did well...

*susan, thanks for sharing the great dog-share,

Nature,
With tears running down my cheeks I am so sorry for your loss! The pain is unbearable, but in time you will heal. Summit loved you unconditionally. She had a wonderful life because she had a caring and loving owner. Know in your heart that you did everything and more for her. Peace be with you.

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate and, as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, could you tell me where we are?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.
'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'
The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveller asked.
'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'
'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'
'How about my friend here?' the traveller gestured to the dog.
'There should be a bowl by the pump.'
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.
When they were satisfied, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.
'What do you call this place?' the traveller asked..
'This is Heaven,' he answered.

'Well, that's confusing,' the traveller said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'
'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'
'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

Doug,
I am so sorry for your loss. I know how you feel; I've had to do it myself. The fact that you would choose to end her suffering, even though it meant the beginning of your own, shows the depth of your love. Peace to you.
Rest in Peace, Summit.
