I have a good friend and climbing buddy, David Gallahger, who is re-locating to Gainsboro, NC, due to his wife's grad school assignment. He left his job, friends, and So. Cal behind. The only thing he's taking is his climbing gear and his home brewery and a lot of free time to climb. Anyone looking for a partner, or wants to show a transplant around Gainsboro's climbing areas, I'm sure David would be appreciative. please send me an e-mail and I'll hook up. Any beta on Looking Glass ect. would also be helpful.
Thanks very much. The climbing community is a tight and frendly bunch. Thanks for helping my partner out. David's a good guy and will be grateful for you help.
Peace, Tony

I am moving to Durham for similar reasons in August. Same situation. Maybe we can form a cali ex-pat support group out there.

Sauratown is definitely closed. The CCC has been talking to the landowner for over a year now. Rumor has it that there have been some encouraging developments but the area remains closed.

The Carolinas- Home of Moon pies, Nehi Orange soda, chili burgers, pulled pork, corn dogs and fried everything.

Give him one year and he will be too fat to climb.

ahhh the plight of the west coast climber...

have no fear folks, there is spectacular climbing in NC and WV, TN, AL areas.
Greensboro is close to Moores wall. Boone is two hours away, New River Gorge is three hours and you will get to see what REAL sandstone feels like.

People always talk about spectacular climbing in the southeast... I think this relies on the definition of spectacular.

The climbing IS there, but the tolerance of humidity has to be attained.

I'm assuming that this friend isn't on here. I live at the base of Looking Glass and get out as much as possible. Here's my email, tell him to hit me up when he gets here: mr8615 at hotmail.

There is plenty of excellent climbing in North Carolina, and Greensboro is well-placed for taking advantage of a lot of it. Very quick to the NRG, Pilot and Moore's are excellent crags very close by. With Pilot, Moore's and (if access is worked out) Sauratown, Greensboro puts you close to climbing in good weather all year, with the exception of the hottest, coldest, or rainy days.

Lots of excellent trail for mountain biking in NC as well, along with great lakes and rivers for canoeing or kayaking. Durham is farther from climbing than Greensboro, but offers quality restaurants, a great music scene, and plenty of fun social opportunities.

I guess anything depends on your definition of "spectacular", but NC certainly has plenty to offer to an adventurous resident. There are still some routes at Looking Glass, Ship Rock and Moore's that I want to send if I am able to get back there this October.

I was thinking, 'Where the hell is Gainsboro?" HaHa. I just moved back to NC after being away for 8 1/2 years. The good news is that the cragging on the East Coast is far superior. The most significant climbing in the Greensboro area is Moore's Wall; awesome climbing on beautiful quartzite. North Carolina has the extra bonus of having some bigger cliffs (500-1000+ feet). And as previously mentioned, weekends at the New are quiet manageable from Greensboro. The New is the best cragging in the country.
TYeary, I dropped you a line. If you're buddy needs a partner, tell him to get a hold of me.

Thanks everyone for helping my buddy. I have forwarded all the info and contacts ect. It never fails to please me that we(climbers) are such a loose knit bunch, yet we pull together we for each other in a fasion rarely seen in "families".
Thanks,
Tony

Tony,
Friends don't let friends move to North Carolina. If you need help kidnapping him, give me a call. I know some homies in Wilmas that are up for anything.

Why do couples do it doggy style in North Carolina? So they can both watch NASCAR on the TV.

g'boro is not a bad location, close to some nice climbing, Moore's wall in particular. Pilot tends to be a group/scout crag, but is worth a few trips and is an easy after work destination.

stone mtn is not far for some NC slab climbing.

linville gorge (backcountry) is only a couple/few hours, as is boone (several crags, boulders).

further west and south gets you to rumbling bald and looking glass.....then on to Laurel Knob (1400 feet or so), Whitesides....Big green.....the bigger/longer routes.

and WV gets you the New and Seneca.
