Doug has been caught trying to plant evidence up on Temple Crag this weekend as proof for his Atomic Broom theory that the Sierras were cleaned by A-blasts in Nevada for about 25 years. It’s a bitter moment for American Climbing as we all love him but to apprehend him fabricating proof for his unique conjecture is beyond the capacity of most to forgive and does call into question the veracity of all previous of his suppositions.

Ding, it's all because I haven't had any construction projects for six months so I am home a lot doing Creative Suite 4 / Photoshop tutorials, and so I do these kooky images for a break, you know. It is incredibly fun. thanks btw. The Donini ones were incredibly fun to do.

Well, I bet he can't prove it isn't true - so doesn't that mean it's true? No need for junk science or conspiracy theories or anything.

And about those ferocious giant bloodthirsty Canadian wolves in Idaho... Note that there aren't any in the Sierra, which right by itself is proof that someone in California is out to get RokJox.

Very funny story, Peter! And cool artwork! I almost fell for it thinking we'd all be throwing in for Doug's bail! LOL! He's more stealth than that though.

Missed the original thread last year. Thanks for posting it. An interesting concept with an especially fun dialogue around it.

Thank you Rokjox - I enjoy your stories very much and read all of them. Some are quite imaginative and entertaining.

Any proof that your friend's dog was killed by a wolf? Might it not have been coyotes, a cougar, or a bear - all of which, unlike wolves, are found throughout Idaho? Have any wolves been reliably sighted in the area where the dog was killed?

Simply finding the dog's head seems scant 'proof' that wolves were involved.

Did I mention that my mother, a school librarian, was a huge fan of Little Red Riding Hood? She had a giant collection of related books and memorabilia, which will eventually form a display at UBC. Wolves make good stories, whatever the truth.

I wonder if they set off a few test blasts in Idaho, say in the vicinity of Boise? That would explain a lot of things. Imaginary giant ferocious mutated bloodthirsty Canadian wolves, for example.

Edit: Isn't Boise downwind of the Sierra?

Yes, really and truly Bruce,

It's like a roast and we really are just foolin' around.
The notion that DR would plant evidence to support his, um, theory, is all in the over-the-top imagery of folly and as such a jocular, jovial even, appreciation of our buddy.

Shredding on our friends in a creative way.

Rokjox has a good point. Even allowing for the usual Idahoan paranoia and conspiracy theories, there's no doubt that the US government, at least somewhat knowingly, used citizens living downrange from its nuclear test sites as guinea pigs in the 1950s.

Edit: And the nuclear industry generally - southeast Washington, Nevada, New Mexico...

Far be it from me to be the first one here to break character and trample the mood and all and say something flatfooted and straight-up, but...

Bruce, it's cool. Really. We're just needling each other a bit here, and we wouldn't dare do it if we weren't 40-year good friends underneath it all. Like being a good climbing partner, once you've held each other's lives in your hands enough on the end of the rope, a certain amount of good-natured ribbing tends to break out. That's all this is, among friends.

I hear you about the meaner, slandering sort of stuff that can happen here too. Sorry you've been stung by it. I have too. Like over Growing Up, remember? And thanks again, BTW, for having my back there. Much appreciated. Peter and Tarbuster were with me too.

One of the big difficulties of a words-only communication like our exchanges online here, is that in a normal face-to-face conversation something like 80% of the actual communicating happens through facial expressions, body language etc. That makes it super easy to mistake, misread, or just plain miss the attitude that goes with the words -- which would have been easily picked up in person.

Anyway, sorry it got to seeming out of hand...

Oh yeah, "Nice..."

Enough thread drift, now back to radiation drift.

Apparently the acid rain researchers working lakes in the Wind Rivers had evidence linking the acid rain there to sulfur coming from the Four Corners power plant down in Navajo land. That's blowing a lot more north than east...

So cancer up in Idaho would be the same cloud-drift direction from the Nuclear Test Site. Not so far fetched.

(An interesting expression here, actually, since "fetch" can also refer to the direction wind comes from.)

Consider the case of the Jerritt Cyn mine shutdown.

Of similar significance, and perhaps not as well recognized a tremendous amount of the air over California (and of course Oregon) has arrived from China. Although this issue implies we are receiving their pathogens, worse, we are receiving an enormous amount of their industrial pollution. Read below.

“Estimates are that a third of California's air pollution and a fifth of Oregon's comes from China. Sensors in the Sierra Nevada Mountains have identified huge Chinese pollution clouds that traverse the Pacific.

“Every seven to 10 days, as the New York Times reports, a new coal-fired plant big enough to serve every household in San Diego comes on line in China, exporting more pollution to California and the Western United States than Schwarzenegger's draconian proposals could ever hope to eliminate.

“As a "developing" nation, China is exempt from the Kyoto agreement under which industrialized countries are trying to reduce their collective emissions of greenhouse gases. China burns 2,500 tons of coal and 210,000 gallons of crude oil per minute. It has plans for 2,200 additional coal generators by 2030.

Apparently this is common knowledge in environmental circles and appears all over the internet searches. Here it is excerpted from:

There was never a time in my life AFTER CHUCK (YEAGER)* when sonic booms were NOT reality here in Central California, until the govamint stepped in to do something. Remember getting the shift scared out of you as you watched the Mouse Club? And we used to jump up and run outside to see the source of the sound, miles away by then.

I don't know specifics, only what the internet tells me, like "The first law against sonic boom was placed by Santa Barbara, California in October 1967."

*A sound master would realize the times they are a-changin' and accept the scheme of Before Chuck or BC and After Chuck or AC, were it ever proposed. Hey, that's as valid as a stone master version with Pratt as the timeline divider.

It is strange (or is it just human) that on short, sharp routes a bolt appearing after an FA or an FFA, is considered a breach of manners and style, but then, on a long old route like this one in a remote area hardly anyone will know about much less repeat, the ethic still sticks with the leaders who care about style, and the bolt never gets placed, only a quondam removable stopper suffers, and the route's integrity remains intact, for what it's worth.

Seems death-wishy, somehow, but that's the nature of confronting ourselves in nature. It is, just like watching NASCAR is for some, I suppose, recreation. What is "fun" and what is "unethical" and "safe" are usually intertwined in our modern minds, but DR seems to have a clear understanding of it all, having had to earn his bread from such wisdom as he has accumulated through experience, making him "expert," giving him credentials...

Can't say anymore, don't hardly know DR, just his old-fashioned ethics. I wouldn't care if he got up or down, only that

he lives to climb another day
and maybe have another say.

And he brings them home alive.
