The guy sitting to Mari's right is Mike Guardino aka The Gargoyle. A very nice guy and in his day, did some very hard climbing. I think he forgot the sunblock that day

Two Facelifts ago had Route 120 presented less of a challenge I might have had
a chance to talk to John.
But from my own experience and from what has been shared here we know
there was a day when young John was sitting on a rock banging his heels to
reduce the pain in his toes, entirely absorbed by the beauty of the blue sky and
by how life giving was each breath of cool fresh air. Facing the unknown
challenges above by his own choice, as he was, he would have known the
most incredible fact of all. That he and he alone would decide what was to be
done with his life.
He decided to become superb.
As indeed he was.
There is more.
His passing tells us something just as important as the realization he had those
many years ago. The shock felt everywhere tells us his most important work,
yet, lay in front of him.
And so it does for each of us.

Man just sitting around remembering this day, tonight. Talked with John's Dad today, talked with Bullwinkle today, talked with Jane at Patagonia today talked with my son Nikki today! Man I had a good day. All my talks had to do with John in one way or another. Hey Bro, hope yer doing good, thanks for the "visit" today. Memories are the spirits visiting!

Think about jb nearly everyday as do others. Others whose lives will be indelibley and forever changed from his death.....changed in ways incomprehensible, changed both for great good and great sorrow, accompanied with loss and a quest for a new understanding of life and love and friendship. Peace,

Thanks to everyone who contributed and shared this very personal event with the climbing community. John was always in our collective periphery, even if we were watching from the outside... we still watch and share with the celebration of his life.

When I started climbing in 1994, in the tahoe / sierra region, JB had already firmly passed into legendary status. As I learned, it was while walking the shadow of the master, his signature on routes and boulders everywhere I went.

Can hardly believe four years have passed. My friend and I are cleaning her house to some oldies, including a lot of old soul/R&B. I worked with John for a few years. A song came on that recalled a really fun memory. It's important to keep some of the fun times remembered, in memory of a person.
So, a bunch of us were at Outdoor Retailer (Boreal). It could have been the second night of the show. There was a bar/club that had a dance floor. We were all leaving to the next stop, when a James Brown tune came on: I Feel Good. John, who wasn't usually losing his cool in a situation like this, grabbed my arm with such force I nearly lost my footing.
He put on some James Brown dance moves with such expertise, you could only assume, they were practiced in his kitchen, when no one was watching. Being a huge fan myself, I could only marvel at his accuracy.
In a moment, he was clearly alone in his bliss. In his tan boots, his white-boy-long-blond-hair waved like Cornwallis' white flag - Ladies and gentlemen, the amazing John Bachar.
