BNuts and I are headed out to the East side of the Sierras soon for a 2 week climbing trip. We’re thinking of base camping near Lee Vining for the first week and near Bishop for the second week.

We’re looking for some suggestions for good NF or BLM car camping locations near Lee Vining and Bishop, at about 7000’ to 8000' if possible. And hopefully some place that is free. We need fairly easy access and some room for a large vehicle (e.g. trailer).

Anybody have some favorite spots or suggestions you’d be willing to share with us? Feel free to email via TacoNet if you don’t want to heavily publicize a favorite spot. Thanks!!

Crimpie,
not exactly near Lee Vining, but you could camp at The Glass Creek, or Big Springs cgs. These are located between Mammoth, and June Lake. Big Springs campground is on the upper Owens River, and charges $2/night. cool setting

You may want to check out my friends website

http://www.logabout.com/

It's still in beta but he'll have info about all the places he's camped in that region (with his 28' trailer).

I think it's called Cottonwood springs just outside Mammoth. Close to town, but off the road, and it's free! Just off Sherwin creek road.

Callie,
I think that you two will soon appreciate the concept of "localized anomaly" as soon as you head over to the dry side from the Front Range fifties,..
I've seen plenty hotter, but the season over here is still unmistakable.
You taking 50?
Cool drive,...

Guys, the rest stop on the West side of 395 North of Mammoth and South of the Hartley Springs campground (a good one to stay at) has a drinking water pump - and it's really good water. So you can fill up your bottles there and avoid having to go back to Mammoth or the June Lake store to buy more.

Bnuts and Crimpergirl, Hey watch driving around with camper in all the pumice up in Mammoth. Especially turning around(easy to get stuck). May want to check out spots in Pine Creek (may have something in the shade next to the creek. Then there is always the B-milks where the creek crosses the B-milk road. May be able to find some willows to park under. But still alittle hot in Bishop.
If you want schooled in a little bouldering I would be happy to tour you guy/gals around the B Milks. L8er-e
