On our Middle Fork Salmon 7 night, 8 day adventure, last summer, we were easily able to secure the "un-loved" Whitie Cox Hot Springs camp for one night.

I like the hot spring! In spite of the shallow muddy-bottom, and a fringe of poison-ivy (poison-oak for you Calis), and a plenitude of nasty biting red spider mites, and also, a general lack of ambiance.

(maybe that's why I like it: it keeps the casual tourist out!)

Named for early 1950's prospector, Whitie Cox, who dug a little too deep, while seaching for gold. His gold burrow caved in on him, and he was buried on the terrace above his burrow, near the hot spring.

After I led most of our party up to the hot springs and explained how wonderful it was, everyone declined.

I sneaked up later, and had a wonderful, but short soak. I did need to depart, before the biting "red-spider mites" found me out.

and i don't mind adding, ken, in case you haven't noticed, that we're getting a whole lot of prissy excuses from our dear governments to deny public access which has long been traditional. it's why we're not climbing at williamson rock any more. last year, i got a ticket, since thrown out of court, for driving on two inches of snow, most of which had been melted by traffic anyway. "hazardous winter conditions." i hope all the east siders on this thread take note of that.

Hot spring at Hveravellir, Iceland, in the Sprengisandur highland between the Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers.

This is an interesting hot spring in northern Iceland, near Myvatn. It is in a cave.

The hot spring is actually in a huge vertical crack in the lava at the bottom of a cave. The crack filled with ground water. Of course, with all of the active volcanic activity the water is about 102 degrees. This pool is about 15 feet deep, and the crack runs for about 50-100 feet.

Dan, How did you get a car into Carson River hot springs. I know there is a road with a lock gate on the south side of the river. I have seen on google earth what looks like a ranch road coming in from the north. A friend of mine had a student from Markleeville that said they used to hike in from the air strip. Looks fun!

You take Leviathan Mine Rd. from Hwy. 395 .

From that road you get on a Forest service road . All total it is about 8 miles from 395 . Pretty easy to find . You probably want a 4x4 on that road , and definitely need it in the winter .... Or just wait until summer and float down the Carson river like most folks do .

All the info is in that 'Hot Springs of CA and NV' book ...
