I have a lot of images of John in my climbing gallery, which is here

I'm adding some portraits of John. They are uploading now as I type.
My retail photo business model lately has been selling the prints for cost and having folks donate the "profit" portion on a sliding scale via paypal. (I have guidelines on my site about what my usual cut used to be before this)
In any case, I encourage anyone buying photos of John to donate the profit portion to his memorial fund when an appropriate account is established.
May everyone make it through this in the best way possible. I'd say John has already sent and clipped the chains, but instead he's soloed right past them to the true summit

John's father and brother are on their way and I know Tyrus's Mom is also on her way for her son. Tyrus needs the support of John's family right now, as well as all of us. spoke with him(Tyrus) yesterday, understandably shocked, but he IS so strong and is in great hands as I write this. It's a great idea that we come together for Tyrus, and maybe the family should be involved in WHATEVER decision we, as a community, for his benefit. I don't know what the situation is yet, too early, but we should consider keeping them involved and having a BIG word in this matter. We don't know their situation and should respect their wishes and needs. Thanks and....

Wise words Ron. Perhaps when there is a better idea of John's family's plans, the climbing community can help Tyrus (financially and otherwise). If there is anything I can do to help, email me.

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far.
I really have no idea where to go with this.
Jello and Ron have good points.
I got a nice email from John's brother Dan, who said how much he and the rest of the family appreciate the support and the outpouring of affection.
I will email him and give him a link to check the thread and let them know that the tribe wants their input. Maybe if the family administers the fund, it will cut out a middle man.
I certainly want to recognize the effort that Fattrad and Ken have made already and have them included as fully as they are willing. Maybe just put it in the hands of these guys and the Bachars?
I'm sure the family will understand that we are trying to honor John and provide some support to Tyrus.

The priority for now has to be helping John's family, especially Tyrus, in whatever way is needed. Especially their human and emotional needs, but possibly also with financial and legal matters. In the short term, seeing that Tyrus is looked after, and that any immediate needs are attended to. In the longer term, as someone mentioned, John's friends need to commit to being there for Tyrus. No one can take John's place for Tyrus, but we can all help as he grows.
It will party depend on what state John's business, legal and financial affairs were left in, whether he had a will and executor, insurance, and so on. Those things will need to get sorted out sooner rather than later, and those with financial or legal skills (Jeff, Randy, Rick?) may be able to help with that - it's up to the family.
Perhaps we can also help with a fund for Tyrus, for the short or long term or both. I'd be happy to contribute to it, once we know what the needs are.
All we can do for now is offer to help, and make sure the family knows we're ready to help.

i think a fund set up for Tyrus is key. and i'll help in anyway i can and could get some fund raising events going in my neck of the woods.
To me the deep pockets should come from the industry. We/they/us owe that much and more to do for Tyrus what John did for climbing...
i still can't believe this is real and am CRUSHED but will do what i can to help his son feel the love that we all have for JB.
All that i am, all that i have climbed is a direct result of JB letting me tag along as the young punk that i was and sometimes still am! I will miss him more than he will ever know.,,,

Long term and immediate needs can be two separate things. When a person passes away, often their loved ones have trouble even accessing funds for basic needs. That's one reason people help out by putting what they can in envelopes and depositing near the condolences registry at wakes and memorial services.
Since our community is far flung, to all corners of the world, a similar thing could be done via PayPal, as a Tacoan above posted.
I'm glad to read that Tyrus' family is on the way to him, hoping already there. It must be so hard for him right now. Of course the family has so much to deal with, but as people have said, once the family has time to deal with this topic and lets their feelings be known, then things can go forward.

Wow Eiger!! Help from Switzerland, that is awesome.
Not sure what shape this will take just yet. I'm sure that the family will be just dealing with the big shock for awhile, but eventually it will take a form of some kind.
Check back, or I will try to send out email to everyone that has offered help so far. A website with a paypal attachment can be posted on all kinds of climbers websites!

The outdoor retailer trade show starts on the 21st of July in SLC. Acopa had a booth and this is where many of us here would get a chance to reconnect with John.
Although it is short notice, it might be nice to have a tribute to John. Either the Industry Party on the 21st (not quite John) or better yet the Bouldering Championship atop the Shilo Inn on Tuesday the 21st. If any of us has a connection to the organizers it might be nice give props to a man whose influence ties back to training and bouldering.
In years past during the trade show JB and Steve West would host a party a the now extinct Zephyr Lounge, the closest SLC had to a blues bar. John would get up on the stage with his sax, fit right in with the band and have a beaming ear to ear smile. Guess he made the most selling shoes.

After Alex Lowe was killed in an avalanche yen years ago the community of climbers stepped up to help with the education of his three sons. As their dad (Alex is "father" & I'm "dad") and husband to his widow Jenni, the support for the children is a reflection of how close our tribe is. To this day we get visitors who knew and climbed with Alex. These moments to reconnect with the kids and Alex's spirit are special. Tyrus - we'll be there for you in the coming years.

I like the Shiloh idea. Hope it works out.
The parties at the Zephyr were great (and I scored the door prize once too!). Sad that the place is gone, but as with John, the good memories live on.
(not gonna ask about that "wife to his widow" quote; hope it was just a mis-speak, but it does bring to mind Ron White's strap-on joke.
But I thought YOU were the tool user,..)

It was always fun to visit with John, Steve, Michael, Dario, Anastasia and others at the Acopa booth during OR. During happy hour, I sometimes 'borrowed' beer from the big boys' booths, and snuck it over to the guys at Acopa - they seemed thirsty.
I wasn't planning to be at the OR this year, but if there's a memorial for John planned, I'd try to attend. Particularly if it was soon before or after any memorial in Mammoth, and I could get to both. Hopefully someone could get me into OR, as I no longer have an active role in the Access Society here.
Perhaps there will be more information about a memorial, a memorial fund for Tyrus, and an event at OR fairly soon. Several climbing manufacturers are based in or near SLC, and perhaps could talk with the organizers about this.

I'd been waiting until the subject of your incredible photos was brought up ... . I picked one up from the last offering and it hangs proudly in my living room.
It seems like you have one of the most extensive and amazing collection of pics of John around. Someday in the future, a high quality print book with the collection of your photos of John would be amazing. Some collaboration with other photographers could fill it out even more.
The only source most of us have for so many cool photos are from old magazine clippings (my collection only goes back to 1986), old adverts, a poster or two, and the internet (not always the best quality). Baba has some pretty cool "newer" pics to add, but you've got a treasure trove of some amazing stuff.
Anyway ... just a thought.
