Just when you thought things had settled down in Iran - those crazy mullahs go and pull this sh!t -
"Leading Clerics Defy Ayatollah on Disputed Iran Election
CAIRO — The most important group of religious leaders in Iran called the disputed presidential election and the new government illegitimate on Saturday, an act of defiance against the country’s supreme leader and the most public sign of a major split in the country’s clerical establishment."
Normally, I am adamantly opposed to religion intervening into a political system - but in this case, I might make an exception - hell..it IS the 4th of July and I like fireworks!

This is big.
(if real, given the source there's some reason to doubt)
In historical terms this is like a 15th century pope telling an Italian monarch to knock it off.
Things will get interesting.

In American politics the feet trunk and arms rule.
There is no head.
This is why democracy does not work.
They forgot and killed the head a long time ago ......

Don't you mean fat Ayatolah?
Why needlessly insult the word used for God by millions of people?
It seems to me this kind of ignorance of other people's culture and religion is one of the things that enabled the religious fanatics to grab and hold power in the first place.

It is interesting that the two major ongoing problems in the Middle East stem from family feuds that went public. Ishmael vs Isaac's descendants and the Sunni-Shiite split through a falling out between Mohamed's brother-in-law and his son-in-law.
It seems they need the concept of no fault divorce over there for relatives as well as spouses.

Ricky D- It's a theocracy. They aren't "intervening" they ARE the government. In any case this is some pretty good news especially since the movement has been driven underground for the moment. Hopefully we will see a periodic resurgence in a cyclical manner that eventually creates reform there. I think we need to be clear though that while this would likely be an improvement to the current system, the "reform" candidate was Prime Minister in the 80's and oversaw hundreds of executions and other policies we would all likely find abhorrent.

HDDJ - cogent points you make about reality being the final arbiter.
I understand full well that the most likely outcome for the immediate moment will probably involve some form of violent government sanctioned outlash.
What I hope, is that once a population has gained a tacit awareness of their power as a unit - that this will mark an evolutionary shift in self-perception within the Iranian society itself.
Like a seed (or better, a weed) it may just grow.
Then, it will get really interesting.
