I was looking at the Inyo NF permit info online and have a couple of questions...

If a trailhead quota is shown for a particular date, is that for the starting day only?

How early do you have to show up for popular trails to get same-day permits (worst case scenario you've seen)?

best bet is to be there when they open, usually not a problem if yer in line early. What ya gonna do? Have fun, be safe!

I've never had a problem with permits. Weekend entry dates are tougher, but while the person behind the counter says there aren't many, they always seem to have one when I try.

While I've never had a problem, I've also never tried for Whitney. Starting two years ago, you now need a permit for the North Fork even for a single day trip.

Give it a go. Report back, with pictures.

Was that ever necessary in your experience, eKat? How often did you turn folks away? I'm thinking camp 4 insanity here.

Also re: question #1...Are the "all full" dates shown only for starting dates? i.e. If it shows availability on the 5th, but not afterwards, can I head out for a week on the 5th?

Melissa,

I can't answer for certain, but here in the park if a trail head is listed as full, then that is only for going in on that day. If there are spots available for entry on the fifth, then it doesn't matter how long your trip is for.

Mellisa, I was told by the person issuing permits last year that they hold four permits, for every trail, every day. I was told that it was to accomodate the walk-ins. Just be at the office when they open. Good luck and have a blast! Gabe

For North Fork of Lone Pine over night cancellation/nonreservable(4 per day), no need to get there early. Just get there about 10:45 am. At 11am they hand out random numbers, then start from the lowest number. Better call to confirm, but that's how it was last year.

And yes, the quota is just for the entry date. Once you are in you can stay as long as you want. They ask how long you will be, but that's just for statistical use. The desk ranger even told us you can exit for supplies, etc, so long as one of your party remains behind. Helps to make multiple copies of the permit.

I've got permits for two entry dates in August. Will probably just use one. More for lucky walkins.

Yeah, the only date that matters is your entry date. But as far as how long you can stay, the Rangers told me 14 days from your date of entry is the limit.

Also, if you reserve, you gotta pick your permits up by 10 a.m. on the date of entry, or they will be given away to first-come first-servers. But you can call 1-2 days in advance to let them know if you'll be picking them up after 10am, and they'll hold them for you.

Edited to add: I was told they starting issuing first-come, first-serve permits the day BEFORE entry!
