Hey everyone, Planet Granite climbing gyms have created a great Climb-a-thon for raising money for the ASCA, and they will MATCH up to $10,000 in donations! There will be two dates - June 27th at Planet Granite in San Francisco, and July 18th at Planet Granite in Sunnyvale. BBQ, beer, prizes, etc!

http://www.planetgranite.com/temp/ascaclimbathon.php

You can sign up for a personalized online event page, then email it to friends, so it can make the whole "donate-x-when-I-climb-500'-vertical" thing much easier (or your friends can just donate a fixed amount for you):

http://www.firstgiving.com/asca

The traditional paper sponsor packets are available at Planet Granite as well. I'll be at both events with all sorts of old bolts, pulling gear, etc. Hope to see you there!

A big thanks to Planet Granite for making this happen!

Also thanks to Clint for the tuning fork & bolt photos (better than any of mine), and Shayd Forest for being the "model" for the poster (when we were replacing bolts on those old unknown routes right of the Dike route on Pywiack).

Sounds like good events, especially if there's an adequate supply of beer.

Props to all the rebolters and those who have supported the rebolting cause.

It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it!

Would you rather climb on this bolt:
Or this bolt?

What is the ASCA?
The ASCA is at the forefront of rebolting efforts, having replaced over 6,000 old bolts across the country using mostly volunteer efforts. Planet Granite is committed to giving back to our climbing community and will match up to $10,000 of the funds raised at these events.

The American Safe Climbing Assocation (ASCA)
is active in California and throughout most the US, including Yosemite, Pinnacles, Red Rocks, Tahoe and more!
 is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
exists via donations from people like you!
is a mostly volunteer only operation.

Help us raise money to support the American Safe Climbing Association
presented by Planet Granite
FREE BBQ & BEER!
Lots of Prizes, Fun and Climbing! Join the ASCA and Planet Granite in two ASCA Climb-A-Thon fundraisers.
June 27th at Planet Granite San Francisco
July 18th at Planet Granite Sunnyvale
You can participate in one or both events. The minimum sponsorship is $50. From 1p-4p there will be free climbing for all participants, sponsor tables, snacks and fun. After the climbing there will be BBQ, beer, sodas, prizes, etc. for the participants. Enjoy cool music, prizes and booty from our sponsors!

You will need to register for a sponsor packet either online or visit the front desk of your local Planet Granite
Register now so that you can start fundraising. You can register as a team or individual. For more information about how the Climb-A-Thon will work, click here. The first event is in just a few weeks!
Our goal is to raise $10,000 between two events. Planet Granite will match up to $10,000 of the funds raised so we have the opportunity to raise at least $20,000. Funds raised will be used by the ASCA to purchase new hardware for bolts and anchors. Come for the fun, the community and a good cause.

Thanks for all your work on this, Greg. And of course the donations by the sponsors.

Sometimes I forget that it takes a lot of donation $$ to pay for all the replacement bolts and hangers. Powers, Fixe, etc. do not donate that hardware, even though they provide a volume discount. When you have a guy like Roger Brown replacing over 330 bolts in a summer, the mass of hardware to support his efforts is huge! (I've tried to lift part of it... :-) ).

Yeah, Roger Brown is almost certainly the guy with the most bolts replaced next to Greg Barnes...

Clint has replaced a whole bunch as well...

Yep Clint, actually the costs on some of the gear - especially the rap hangers, single or double-ring, have gotten so high lately that we've had to cut back or stop ordering them. Around triple the cost compared to 5 or 6 years ago, and double for standard hangers. Dollar tanked, steel costs went up, shipping costs went up, etc.

Roger certainly replaces more bolts per year than anyone I know, and a couple more years he'll definitely top out the replaced-with-a-hand-drill category. I've probably done 2/3 of my 1600+ with a hand drill, and I don't know how many Kevin Powell did with what, but he'd tallied up around 1500 bolts replaced, and that was 10 years ago!

Bruce H must be way up there too!

t*r, that link is to sign up for the event, and then send info to friends who donate in your name. Planet Granite will match donations, but if you aren't going to the event it'd be better to wait and donate to a friend's Climb-a-thon page. If you don't know anyone who's going to participate, I'm not quite sure on how to work it. Let me get back to you on that!

Thanks! Greg

"Details and goals of the event: A Climb-A-Thon is just like any other “A-Thon” fundraiser, except the participants will be climbing vertical feet to reach their goals! Participants can work in teams or individually. You set the goal and raise the money. Your friends and family who sponsor you can donate a flat fee, for example $20, or do a “per foot” climbed sponsorship. Every participant who raises $100 will receive a free ASCA t-shirt. There will also be other prizes and fun activities, such as prizes for the most vertical feet climbed. The event is followed by BBQ; beer for participants and their belayers."

No plans for socal - this is a Planet Granite idea to begin with, and they've done basically everything! Aside from some text & pics, and some bolt displays that I made, they've done it all, so that's at least 99% of the work setting this thing up. They wanted to help us out, and this way they can double their support, and have a fun event at a couple of their gyms too!

scuffy, tr, and anyone else who wants to have their donations matched but doesn't know anyone doing the Climb-a-thon - Planet Granite will match your donations if they are specifically earmarked for this event!

SO - if you'd like to donate and have your donation matched, you can:
donate by Paypal off of the ASCA website (the "Make a Donation" button)
donate by check to: ASCA, PO Box 1814, Bishop, CA 93515

And please email me that your donation is for the Planet Granite Climb-a-thon. You can also write a note on the check, or a note in the Paypal donation process. I will reply to your email so you can be sure I received it (it seems like a good number of emails disappear into the spam-filtering nether world...).

Thanks to Planet Granite - this is really cool of them to match donations!!

Though I plan to be geographically out of the loop by then, if perchance I did run into someone, say my partner from our, 'El cap in a day, in a gym (which was PGSF, oddly enough). event' - what's her name, how much might we raise, and what, really would that money go to?
Greg Barnes

Topic Author's Reply - Jun 3, 2009 - 11:30pm PT
Hey Jaybro - it would go towards buying more bolts & hangers - for instance, we've postponed buying more double-ring Fixe rap station hangers since they have gotten so expensive (higher steel prices, depressed dollar, higher shipping costs). We have also cut way back on pre-camo hangers (tan camo primarily), saving ones we already have for the places where they are required (JT, Red Rocks) - we could send more of them to places where they are nice but not required. Wholesale hanger prices (and european bolt prices) have at least doubled in the past few years, as anyone who buys them pro-deal knows.

What the heck are you doing climbing stuff with old bolts?

You do have to admit that that bolt looks a lot better than the ones you clipped on Fiddler on the Roof on Fairview last year while you were rope-gunning for me to replace!

If I get a partner (anyone?) are there drop in sponsors?

Jaybro, not sure on the drop-in or last-minute type climbers, I'll contact the PG folks in the morning and find out. It does say on their webpage that they will try to match up folks without belayers before the event, so I'll ask to see if they have some people on the list waiting for partners.

Jaybro (and anyone else thinking of coming last-minute), PG folks say that there are usually lots of people looking to share belays, and that drop-in or last-minute participants are very common. Come and climb and have fun, no worries if you don't have any sponsors lined up!

Where's Roger?
(photos from Sunday 6/21/09)
Name that climb, if you can??

Roger (Brown) is back in the Valley for another summer rebolting marathon. I delivered a load of ASCA hardware from Greg to Roger, but we are short on the Fixe Double Ring Hangers, due to cost increases. So we are hoping the Planet Granite Climb-a-Thon will scare up some much needed funds for ASCA, and keep Roger deep in these nice belay anchor hangers for the summer and then some!

I was waiting until we got the final numbers in, and the first fundraiser was a big success! Donations through the online fundraising came to $4767, with an additional $520 on the day of the event. Add to that the $500 even that several folks donated to the ASCA earmarked for the PG matching, and we're at $5787! Planet Granite will match up to the first $10,000 for the two events combined, and we're more than half way there!

Turnout wasn't that high - probably because it was one of the very first weekends of summer as far as weather in the high country was concerned - but fundraising was great! The winner in both fundraising and feet climbed was a little girl, Kara, who climbed a whopping 1,680 feet - and she arrived a half hour late due to traffic! Here's a link to a little trip report from her proud dad:

http://vocr.sri.com/~herson/climbing/tr/asca.html

And, with a last minute plan from the night before, Em sponsored the Wyde Challenge, in memory of Brutus. Pretty daunting considering that the only couple of participants who had climbed ow just had shorts on and were gunning for climbing as many routes as they could (yep - you have to admit that offwidths are not a quick way to add up vertical footage).

After a couple people gave valiant attempts that failed to leave the ground, Carolyn found some oversized jeans, taped up her ankles, and sought some advice from Lucho, who claimed that he didn't have to do the ow due to his footwear...

She tried it left side in - this is her first time ever on an offwidth!

She fell off, started again, this time right side in, and fought her way up!

A fun time was had by all, with BBQ and beer out in the parking lot afterwards (while the rest of the Bay was sweltering, the Presidio was perfect, low '70s).

The next (and last) event is in just over 2 weeks, Saturday July 18th, at PG in Sunnyvale. If you haven't been before, it's a huge gym with loads of room, outdoor bouldering, and tons of cool cracks. If you live out of the area or you otherwise can't make it, and you don't know anyone participating who you can sponsor, you can donate straight to the ASCA and as long as you let me know that it's earmarked for the Planet Granite Climb-a-thon, PG will match it! Donate online from the little "Make a Donation" buttons on the upper right at www.safeclimbing.org, or donate with a check - either way, please email me so that we know that it's for the PG Climb-a-thon!

Thanks to everyone who participated! Hope to see you on July 18th!

Greg

PS Already contacting Fixe about ordering more rap hangers...we'll keep Roger supplied. He won't wear T-shirts, we bugged him about that in Tuolumne after a guy asked us who the guy was in the red T-shirt rebolting on Pywiack Dome - and we told him "Roger - but he's not wearing a T-shirt."

Sorry for the delay, but I jumped on a plane right after the second Climb-a-thon and just got back in the country.

Planet Granite was awesome in coming up with the idea, implementing it, spending lots of employee time and advertising it, and matching up to $10,000.

Did we make it? Pretty dang close!

$9,831

PG will match, making a total of:

$19,662

WOW!

Thanks to PG and everyone involved!! Right now I'm placing an over-$10K order with Fixe for more double-ring anchor hangers and other anchor gear (it takes a while since they have to stamp "ASCA" on them in Spain and ship them), ordering glue-in gear for replacement at Upper Blacktail Butte in Grand Teton National Park, etc.

You can view the top fundraisers here: http://www.firstgiving.com/asca

Thanks again everyone!
