A trip report - the boys desert weekend interpreted by Crimpergirl.

Too much office time and not enough climbing time makes for unhappy people. To head off this possibility, BrassNuts and Eeeyonkeee headed out to the Utah desert for some fun in the sun (and rain and wind it turns out).

How could this place not be healing?

The guys hit the road late Thursday heading toward Castle Valley in the Great White. The Great White is a one comfy assault vehicle!

The first goal of the trip was Fine Jade on the Rectory. Some nearby climbers snapped some of the photos. Very cool! It’s unusual to have more than butt shots when the belayer has the camera.

Nice photos taken by other climbers of Eeeyonkeee

Just so no one feels ripped off, here is the requisite butt shot - BrassNuts

Eeeyonkeee summit photo on Fine Jade with Castleton in the background.

While the guys were climbing Fine Jade, BrassNuts looked down and noticed some ravens investigating his pack. As he watched, the birds opened his pack, unzipped the lid zipper, removed everything (rope tarp [which flew away], first aid kit, food). Having secured some high dollar Pro-Bars, the birds flew away! Smart birds. Hungry BrassNuts.

BrassNuts summit shot.

Cool flying saucer rock on the top of Fine Jade.

Castleton is such a striking tower (insert lightning [edit: offensive incorrectly spelled word has been corrected] jokes here) – one can’t help but take several photos of it.

The wind starts to whip on Fine Jade.

Eeeyonkee practices a modeling pose.

Next up was Crack Wars which is located on the west side of the Rectory.

Eeeyonkee on Crack Wars

Only one pitch was completed as the winds whipped up to crazy speeds.

The next day brought rain and cold temps. The guys hung around in Castle Valley in the rig. They did some hiking and reading. Forced rest day – beats a day in the office.

The following morning the rain and cold theme continued though happily it stopped raining relatively early allowing them to get some climbing in. They headed into Long Canyon where they did some routes on Maverick Buttress and other walls. In total they managed to get 4, 5.11s and 2, 5.10s climbed. Sounds like an excellent day to me!

Here are some photos from that day:

Butt Pygmy was one route they did. Sounded like it had an interesting foot camming under-clinging crux and was quite fun.

BrassNuts heads up…

And there goes Eeeyonkeee

Enjoying the view -

After dinner in Moab, they headed back to Castle Valley for the night. The next morning, they climbed Sister Superior.

Here is Eeeyonkee practicing other modeling poses before heading up Sister Superior…

And BrassNuts…

Looking over at the Rectory and Castleton – gorgeous!

The top of Sister Superior afforded a terrific view.

After rapping, and hiking back to the Great White, they made burritos in the luxury of the Great White and headed back to civilization.

You probably have us confused with the Colorado Adams brothers. Yet I have seen PhantomX riding the high wire in polka dots on his unicycle. I know- not such a big deal. But the wire was stretched between K2 and Everest!

Grug--please note: the Adams brothers prefer to respectfully retain anonymity in the presence of attractive females (Crimpergirl).

Hey Animals--concerning the third shot in the Long Canyon series, I was wondering: Has anybody climbed the wicked crack above?

B. (not necessarily Bruce), she's more attractive in person (not that I've noticed). The climb that I'm leading in that pic is called Miss Kitty Likes it That Way, 5.11+. Although our guide didn't have it, Classic Desert Climbs shows that the crack to our right is Rawhide, 5.11+, It's listed at 120' (ours was 90'). By the way, Jack Roberts and another guy (sorry, I can't remember the other guy's name) did pretty much all of the FAs on this buttress.

Cool to see this. My wife Lorna and I did the first ascent of Butt Pygmies in the spring of 1993. We named it "Butt pygmies on a landscape" after a John Wesley Powell quote about how he felt he was but a Pygmy in such a landscape. Also as a joke from the awesome Figures on a landscape climb in Josh. Name must have gotten shortened. Nice to see a picture of it again, I remember that we were pretty psyched to put it up. Not much had been climbed there back then. Glad to see it getting appreciated.

wow what inspiring landscape, beautiful. Greg, youre still the point man for us aging san diego climbers, you may have moved on, but were gonna keep claiming you.

As we all get fatter and weaker you get bigger n badder....

edit: so i posted this and saw the hernia news, sorry to hear that. If it helps, i had the hernia op a few years back and was back to bein fat and weak in no time. Heal well bro

Hey so gonamok it wasn't a hernia at all. I don't know what it was, to tell you the truth. But I'm feeling good again. Getting ready for my 4th Black Canyon climb this season. Thanks for your kind words. We are so lucky to be climbers.
