Know of any? Past or present?
A friend and I were discussing this, and I realized that I have almost never heard or read much discussion of this issue in the climbing community.
I know that if I learned that so and so's significant ascent was aided by steroids, I might be a little disappointed.
C'mon, let's hear the dirt . . .

Maybe post this on Sports Illustrated or ESPN, you might get some traffic on it. I know of a lot of climbers on SED's(sports enhancement drugs)steroids are so passe. Back in the 70's and 80's "some" climbers did various drugs to get up rocks, does this count? I also know a lot of climbers on hemroids!
Peace
5am PST, you must be on roids, should be snoozin. Maybe look up some old data in Rock and Ice, I think I have some old copies that discussed steriods and such. We gonna delete all first ascents if you find out someone took em

Most of us are hyperactive. We need to calm down! Reason why most of us are stoners. If you mix steroids with climbers they will turn into modern equipped Viking Raiders.

Knew one years ago but he was off the juice by the time he started climbing and no one thought much about it. Pretty obvious looking back now though.

Oh yeah... there have been juicers, but I'm not going to go all Canseco on them.
Of course that was before steroids were illegal in climbing, and before Major League Climbing started checking for steroids.

It is abundantly clear Norman Clyde was juicing.
Pretty sure about John Salathe too, carrots if I'm not mistaken.
Edit:
Oh yeah, Whillans too.

I think Russ' response is the most revealing.
I knew it! Climbing's dirty little secret . . .

Maybe we need to institute the FNSFA (First Non-steroidal Free Ascent) for certain climbs . . . ?

Well.
If your over 45 most men can get test perscibed by a doctor. I think there are some anti-aging clincs that will get older men scripts for hgh also.
I've read about some of the sh#t juicing powerlifters and BBers take its pretty gross. HGH, and insulin, test..and a bunch of other sh#t. Still who cares? It's their body..
Its pretty commom for people in society to deem anyone who's musclar as juicing....which is just silly. Still I don't want to put that crap in my body. I prefer beer..
I know stalone admited to hgh use. Did that help him crank harder in cliffhanger..bwahh ha ha ha!

I sure hope no climbers are trying the juice. This page has a pretty interesting somewhat medical approach to how it's done:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/catsteroids.htm
If you read through the bit on say Testosterone Suspension or Equipoise you'll realize how insanely dangerous these things are. Injecting yourself with horse growth hormones - what could possibly go wrong?

I think many people on steroids have blown tendons/ligaments...Don't know the research on it.
I think caffeine has a better/cleaner effect...
Look at Tom Herbert M.D.'s past write up on enhancing products for climbers (not sure if it was Climbing or Rock & Ice).

I knew a guy in Colorado who used them specifically to be a better climber. He put up a few noteworthy ascents in Eldorado, but was never one of the top climbers in the area though using steroids was his attempt to gain that status.

Why do you think so many routes have asterisks by the name in the book?
