Some shots from a Joshua Tree trip a couple weeks ago…as always, great times and great climbing in the desert.

started out in Real HV with Western Saga and Ball Bearing. it had been much too long since either of us had touched stone. it felt good.

then up Saddle Rocks for Space Mountain
Really nice formation…kinda hollow and batty though. The belly crawl to clip to hand traverse at the bottom isn't so bad really and 70m gets you off in one rap ☺ There has to be some reason I'm hauling all this rope on most of these short climbs! On rappel...

then a bolted face route just to the left

The next morning…Bird of Fire

the Dolphin and over to Rubicon

and Imaginary Voyage. I haven’t seen a picture that captures what being inside this thing is like…well done Largo!

Friends on Toe Jam

our last day we hiked out past Willow Hole to the Fortress

Started off with New Hampshire, Naturally. 10b but it’s 5.8 after the first moves, Flared and meh. Ok fun and I like hiking but isn’t there anything sweet?
Ahhh…Reed leads a great 70m pitch on Natural Selection. Probably not 11a (from Vogel)…Bartlett’s 10c seems about right, the middle 20m corner section is really good.

in the crux, looking up at the thin but good gear

Reed on top of the Fortress

then up No Self Confidence…a beautiful steep handcrack, some great sneaky chimneying where it goes to #4 size for a body length 2/3rds up. Good thing too…it’s sustained and wonderful.

It’s the right one. Enough climbing and sun kept our motivation at bay from the left one.

love being in the Wonderland!

What's the deal with Natural Selection at the Fortress? Any good stories or did Randy Leavitt just walk up and crush it? Certainly a stellar line, and the crux corner reminds me a lot of Course and Buggy.

Also, Catapult is a pretty incredible looking line. Anyone been on it? 5.11R 1.5 hours from the car isn't my idea of fun.

I think that face route is "I Smell a Rat."

The Catapult looks amazing but without a serious look it seemed quite R at the bottom. (not sure though, we weren't really pondering it). There's an equally amazing crack/lieback? just right of it as well. (Arms Control 11d...Leavitt, The Bartlett guide has ?'s re: whether it was led or not)

Leavitt's crazy lead out there though is No Self Control 12c R...right under the rap line left of No Self Respect/No Self Confidence on the Flying Fortress. yikes!
