Do guys ever call the people that are supposed to deliver and ask for help? That's what I did last time and I had it fixed next day. Yikes ! :)

Russ,
Re:

> BILL GATES IS GETTING NO REACH-AROUND FROM ME!

Anyone functional (and male) who has seen Gates, even if just on the television machine, would recognize, that that twitchy endless adolescent has yet to figure out even how to give himself a reach-around.

I interviewed him once, in the early 90’s for a geekish magazine. The first thought that went through my head when I met him was “This dude _really_ needs to get laid – at least once.”

He was surrounded by a flock of ‘handlers’. I was supposed to be asking him about the release of an early version of ‘Visual Basic’ – a language I personally despised. He was at the time hawking it as OOP (‘Object Oriented Programming). Hooey! It remains the lamest of the old school procedural languages, albeit it buried in gewgaws. Friends who worked for him told me that he clung to it so because BASIC was the only language he had ever actually figured out.

So he just sits there all twitchy and looking like Mad Magazine's mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. That and just prattling off crap direct from the marketing package on this “revolutionary new version of VB.” In all, a waste of time for both of us.

At one point I got so bored and pissed that I broke the rules his handlers had drilled into me before my precious 9 minutes with the guy – I asked a question on something other than the new version of VB. I asked “Mr. Gates, the newest version of (server) Windows is being advertised as ‘a true 32 bit O/S – but it still has that lame 16 bit old code at it’s very core. When will there be a truly 32 bit Windows O/S?”

At this instant, all five of his handlers looked at their watches in unison and said rather forcefully “Times up! Mr. Gates has many other commitments” and with that the wad of them (and Gates) up and vanished.
~~~
It is odd that most Americans – hell, most on the planet – still cling to this idea that Microswell itself solely rocketed in the persona; computer machine revolution. But all of my really with-it geek pals, and even me, recognize that his outfit actually held up the maturation of the PC back by at least a decade. For all they cared about was killing off the competition and banking all the cash. (Think Netscape, among other steps forward that he/they squashed).
~~~

I’ll say this for the guy, having witnessed him up close. He’s a third rate geek – but you can just smell the carnivore hunger in him on the business front. I’d never want to duke it out with him on a business to business front, there’d be blood everywhere – mine.

By similar anti-chance I once sat through lunch with Warren Buffet (the senior partner of an outfit I once worked for was a personal friend of his and invited me to join them for lunch after some suit gig – I said nothing, but listened hard). Buffet is the opposite of Gates. A polite sweet guy with no ego I could discern. Like the cool old guy who lives down the street. Both he and Gates are now in their own galaxy of those worth bazillions. One of them is a class act who truly earned his money – yet never much cared about his account balance.
~~~
A final thought. You might consider doing what the BORG (the Peoples Republic of China) has chosen to do and make policy – use Linux. It’s free and at present has all of the stuff one actually needs (also free). That and there are effectively no Linux based viruses, worms, malware, or the like. It does take a bit of homework to get all of the Linux O/S and apps together, but outfits like Red Hat have made this rather easy. It struck me that Gate’s retirement came within a couple weeks of the PRC blowing him and his product off…
The only reason I endure Windoze is that my bonehead clients demand it. I’d be much happier with Linux – or the current Mac O/S (with ver X it became so unix like it tastes like Linux too).
Well, enough already. More than enough, as is my fate.
An infinite number of monkeys will eventually type all of Shakespeare. Hell, even just one monkey could do it, given an infinite amount of time. It’s the ‘infinite’ part that is the trick. A trick I rely on in my posts as well. Sheeesh.
A MAC is like Fannie's Pantry, and a PC is like Bishop's Terrace.
The Pantry is easy, and anybody can understand it.
The Terrace is harder, and leads to even more difficult understanding.
Just for fun, set the MAC proxy to the same thing your PC had.
Guess you got somebody's used PC from work.
