Besides all the groovy non-material gifts, the best ones for me are good books, and clothing that I wear. So this year, even though I only got two gifts, I feel like I made out. My wife gave me a great book and her mom gave me a pair of Levi's 501s. The book is "Mycelium Running-How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World" by Paul Stammets. The three parts of the book are:

Part one: The Mycelial Mind
Part two: Mycorestoration
Part three: Growing Mycelia and Mushrooms.

I've been a mycophyle for years and this guy Stammets is cutting edge smart when it comes to fungus. Good read and a good reference, along with many good illustrations. Some of you might find this interesting too.

I wish someone would give me a mushroom book with directions to an incredible patch of porcini not far from where I live that no one else knows about or will ever go to.

You can't walk around the forests here without tripping over more chanterelles than you can carry, but where are the porcini?

I love morels and chanterelles - just can't afford them.

Would love to be able to grow some of my own - any good source of spores that you know about?

Hmmm. Surely there is something available in abundance where most of us live that is scarce and expensive somewhere else. Ricky would like Chanterelles that are pretty easy to pick by the bagful around here (Seattle area), and there's probably something readily available where he lives that's scarce here.

Maybe we should set up some kind of Super Topo barter marketplace. That would fit right in with the "best gifts" spirit of this thread.

Dave, I have had only scattered luck with finding good Porcini's. Most of the ones I have come across have been maggot infested. I do know that abundant crops of them follow below the snow line in spring on the eastern slopes of the Cascades. A pro told me this. I have some ideas of where that might be good. We'll talk.

Tami, howdy. You can quote me all you want , but I probably stole it somewhere. That's how my mind works, I pick up little things here and there and then mix them up and spew them out of the subconscious. It's fun, and scary.

Edit- Ricky D. Chanterelles and Morels are hard to grow. Only recently have the Swedes figured out Chants. Morels can be done but it is a bit tricky. If you really want some sources for spores and mycelium then shoot me an email.

Getting to meet some of the incredible people on the Taco stand.

Some true gifts, for sure.

IN the tangible category I got a camera (Olympus Stylus 1050 SW).

Totally knocked my socks off as I was NOT expecting it. How cool is THAT?! AND it's waterproof and shockproof, so I can take it with me wherever I go!!

And no fungus for me, instead I got one of those huge bags of Peanut M&M's!! Yeah... it was gone in about an hour. Took care of that all by myself, thanks. Funny thing, though: I have had zero desire for junk food ('specially M&M's) since then. Wonder why??

I was truly blessed in the intangible category, too...

Sometimes the best ones are those we give ourselves. I saved a little money and now I'm going to a good bookstore. Brain candy.
