Fantastic eye for design and talent for construction there Sherri - very impressed by your work.

Speaking of log rails - ever tried working with manzanita?

Or for the budget route - if you can't afford real wrought iron - but want the look - nothing beats rebar and a can of spray paint -

My latest work in progress - what can one do with a few thousand river pebbles -

*As for the puke green wall - that is just the base color coat for what will be a trompe l'oeil mural of a grove of aspen trees when I get the time.

Nita--that's an interesting observation about the "norwegian" look of the maple rails. Never thought of it that way, though it makes sense as I was going for a minimalist look w/them. Thanks for the new perspective.

RickyD--I love your manzanita railings! Great job on your fireplace too. Lot of work in those projects. I'm totally with you on the repurposing of construction supplies! Here's my take on the theme; I did the horizontals with electrical conduit, the uprights w/doug fir logs. I can't believe they all came out straight. :0

SteveW--great ideas for murals. How about I post up the RR one when it's finished and see if it's along the lines you're thinking. Bristlecones are so cool, too. I can do just about anything from a photograph; email me if you have a favorite scene or subject and I'll see if it gets the wheels turnin...

Thanks Captain Skully!

Looking forward to the pics, Ed. (I have to admit I've never seen RR at sunrise...)

Nita, Thank you for linking that thread--I had totally missed it, but oh my goodness, I LOVE IT--the story and the photos....it's like discovering a kindred spirit. :) Amazing to see what each person does with what they find.

Would have been cool to have a Dad that could teach me such things, but, as it were, I learned on my own.

Nice pics, SteveW. Great subject for a mural,
with all the flowing contours and beautiful contrasts.
I'll put it in my "idea file" and see if I can work up a design.

MisterT, thanks, that picture is a beaut! (I really need to get better about doing early morning starts
--I didn't know I was missing the best scenery, judging by your and Ed's photos!)
Do you have a full-size version of that one somewhere?

Survival, your masks are awesome.
Like what you'd expect to see displayed in a glass case,
with a big DO NOT TOUCH sign hanging nearby.
Powerful art. Thanks for sharing those.

Sherri, that means a lot, coming from someone with your talent.
It worked well, coming out of a humble piece of Alaskan birch firewood!

You are most welcome, Survival, and you more than deserve the kudos.
You brought that firewood to life in a big way.

Working with salvaged materials
is one of the most satisfying aspect of this business.
Ninety percent of my wood has either been personally salvaged by me from our land
or has found me through other artisans who don't want to throw out scraps they generate.
Every piece has a story.

Sherri - message sent

Some of the best views are in the morning, and sometimes I even get to see them too. other times I wake up early and get out and it is just gray and I should have slept in.

Wow, Karl, those may be oldies but they're sure goodies!
Love the burro, the snowcaps and j-tree silhouette in the first one
That's a neat angle of the canyons on the third one--
don't usually see that perpective photographed.

I appreciate everyone's help here...each photo is adding to the creative process. Like a good brainstorming session.

I'll bookmark this thread and post up a pic
when the mural is finished next month.
