Hey all,
Couldn't one rap the SW Face of Everest all the way down into the Western Cwm on fixed lines, circa all 5,000 feet?
I know it's a lot of line but they haul that much up there anyway. Right?
Just finished reading JK's Into Thin Air (second time) and AB's the Climb. And after looking at the SW Face wondered why it couldn't be done?
Anyone know why? Set me straight. Anyone know if anyone has?
Merry Christmas,
Rap fan

5000 feet, in a storm, at altitude, already tired and beat up, with others who are worse off than you, frostbite, hypoxia....I'm sure I've missed something....oh, and at night.
I suppose it could be done.

Clarification...
I wasn't thinking the worst conditions, Tyeary, but good or great conditions: Beautiful day, your'e in good shape (like Anatoli), the pitches already fixed on rock, not snow, you know their whereabouts... it's in the full-on sun (SW Face remember)... and perhaps you'd like to pass the crowds at the SE Ridge (if you recall)...
Footloose, I am... ain't no troll!

Yes, they haul up a lot of line, no it is not accessible for use rapping. It is set up as fixed line up to the South Col, and it shared by many teams, so is not available to just take.
You'd have to haul up your own line.
And have to deal with the constant avalanches off that face. ESPECIALLY in good conditions.....

You are assuming there's already fixed lines on the SW Face. Few expeditions go that way and what ropes are there( assuming you could locate them) would be very suspect. Unless you climbed the route in the first place then it might make sence to come down that way. Might also be just as easy to come down the SE Ridge too.
Perhaps lmiting the number of climbers on any given route on Everest, would reduce the cluster fest. There are lots of folks who really should'nt be there. Just because one has the disposible income to hire Brice or one of the others who run the "Everest Circus" dosen't mean they are are qualified to be there. I mean no disrespect to any one. Just my opinon.
