My 5 year old who has been climbing, back packing, mt biking, and doing very average in school made me the most proud of him yet today. He saw a photo of the kids in central Africa looking for food and their parents. He could not accept they could not find their parents. Told me they were going to find their parents and find food, and not to worry about them. If every kid and adult could think this way maybe we could change the world. Maybe there is hope

What an astute young man. There are so many kids raising kids in Africa as the parents have all died of aids or war and oppression in one form or another. Many eat one scoop of porridge a day or less. World hunger is real.

hey there mtmun.. say, i let my grandgirls know about this hunger trouble in the world, as, at their house, even though they are on a tight budget, they waste much food, and tons of "useless" toys from others in the extended family that love them... ( useless, i mean, as they have far too many--and the loved ones don't understand what they are doing)....

the kids cant do anything about it now, but they can at least pray and they can learn to not be callous to others that how needs... and perhaps one day, there will something they can help do....

they can also, learn to give now, as to food and clothes, etc, here in town, and then, they can learn to branch out...

nice share, mrtrophy, about your boy...

When we provide our children with the gift of giving, we are providing for every child on earth.
mrtropy, you have every right to be proud, your child is definetly connected to the source.

You can make a difference by giving a gift of a cow, flock of ducks, chickens, goat, etc. to a family in need. Give them a goat and they can feed the family for a years making milk and cheese. Help hungry families feed themselves.

They make wonderful heart warming gifts donating in the name of a loved one. My daughters and I exchange charity gifts at Christmas.

Children ages 5 – 12 should make up the Washington Press Core. Then the “right” questions would be asked. Nice post…

Saw the photo and article in the local rag this morning. Luckily my son woke up before I left for work. The first thing my wife and I did was show he the photo and explain they found their mother. He was a little confused having just woken up but was glad the kids found their mom. I think he knows there is more to life than Pokemon. A good read on the area is King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa.
It sheds some light on one of the saddest situations in the world today.

PS-DMT Climbed a couple of your routes this weekend. Good stuff

The lack of educated questions was not what I was showing. The lack of poignant, intelligent questions, that young people ask, is what the I was referring to.

Mretropy, you should be proud. Great story.

Here's a pic of my daughter (on the left, a 3rd year med student) working with child cancer patients at the hospital in Valencia, Venezuela. I have always been so selfish all my life it amazes me to see her do what she does. She didn't get it from me, and I'm just hoping a little of her will rub off on me!

DMT- Don't tell anyone! of course not!

Largo,
I always admired people who have the knack to work with sick or handicapped kids, it would be to heartbreaking for me to do it well.

Even though he has roped up the last couple years he decided this summer to only boulder as he said "I might not survive"

PS- I have always enjoyed your writing.

Mountain biking with his crazy uncle.
