delightful fellow. the positive thing about his artistic legacy is that posters on here can still probably learn from him--a lot.

-----

a note on the fish: those are paddlefish in that pic, aka spoonbill catfish. the pallid sturgeon is a very different fish and endangered as well--fish and game might have had to arrest him.

where did he catch those babies?

and what is he doing to bear #42?

___

um, from a louisiana fishing site: spoonbill catfish are plankton eaters, you catch 'em by snagging them (mouths are always open--easier to do than with other fish), and they can grow up to 7 feet in length and weigh up to 200 pounds. i think maybe ouch told some pretty good fish stories too.
------

a little followup: the pallid sturgeon report could stand--the fish wasn't considered endangered in 1975, although wiki reports adults weigh up to 85 lbs. that pic, however, shows paddlefish. any pic of the sturgeon?

the pallid sturgeon was caught on a leadhead bucktail jig in the tailrace of the Ft Peck Dam in Montana....in the mid 70s.....legal at the time, and a rod and reel world record at the time.....as for the spoonbill cats.....they snag them in Montana down near Glendive......but in the Missouri near Ft Peck...snagging is not effective.....bow and arrow.....fishing arrow tied to a gallon jug float with 150 lb test braided line......trolling on a cloudy day would scare the nearly blind fish to the surface where they would be arrowed....the jug tossed out, and the chase was on......recall Captain Quint in Jaws with the harpoon gun and barrels.....'he can't stay down with 3 on him....not with 3"......same thing applied there....you got a good estimate of size based on how long the paddlefish could keep the jug under before it surfaced for the first time........early one morning in about 1973 or 1974, Ouch (Dad) and I were trolling in the dredge cuts below the Ft Peck Dam....in a 16ft boat.....and a shadow rose near the boat....behind to the left.....that was easily more than half the length of the boat......never got a clean shot at that one....but based on size of ones we DID.....that one was over 200 lbs.......

thanks Cosmic and Gene. Supertopo has history. This is pure gold. It is to be savored in little bites. Besides it's 1:30 in the morning and I was laughing so hard I woke my wife up.

i was so touched to see how his daughter shared her love for him, and how we learned who he was...

very sad, when any part of the quilt here, dies... :(

god bless to his family...
wish we could hear from his daughter again, i had a christmas card for her one year, but the next year, the address seemed to be no good, :(

thanks for the bump and the reminder.

I just re-registered ouchlives.com.

I'll see if I can get the site running again.

His archived recently resurfaced so I'll see if I can pull out some more content. Might even be time to update the site to something more like the new sushifest.org site.
