If I post a thread about climbing and surfing, am I half on topic or half off topic?
Anyway, I wondering in bed tonight if there was a perfect place to climb and surf. And I figured there's no place like the internet to find answers. So, I wanted to see if anybody here could help me with about geography, economy, and adventure. I am a climber who has been on a surfboard once in my life, but a couple of seasons snowboarding has taught me that life is somehow better with a board under my feet. Something tells me that being on top of a surfboard will enchant me immediately. I'd love to find a place with killer climbing - steep enough routes to gain and maintain fitness with a variety of grades so that there will be projects for a long time. I'd prefer more mellow, predictable surf to learn on during the off-days and definitely want to be located where first world currency could go a loooong way with prudent spending and a simple lifestyle.
Does such a place exist?
I have this thread going on another rockclimbing forum because it seems so many people are turning into climber/surfers...or surfer/climbers. I'm pretty sure there's got to be something it, and it be nice to start saving and planning for a vacation to find out what that something is!
(Oh, and please let the surfing be in the sun, with a bathing suit and NOT a wetsuit!)
...waiting to see what destinations come up feels like Christmas Eve!

California?
I'm in Guam right now, some new routes going in here, and I dive almost 7 times a week with no wetsuit - at night. Water is never under 85. Neither surfing or climbing is stellar though.

I've thought a lot about the perfect surf/climb sitch. Spain or Portugal (cheaper). If you are doing a school/work thing California may be best. I'd say generally you will be limited to sport climbing if you want to be near surf, Mountains are just not next to the coast except where it is freezing. Chile has some climbing/surfing areas but pack your 5/4 mm. France has a lot of everything, but the water is cold in the winter and crowded in the summer.
If you are just starting out surfing you'll need a consistent and forgiving point break to make fast progress. A sand or cobblestone bottom would be best. Are you thinking about a trip or a move?
Thailand does not have real surf and Costa Rica does not have real climbing.

It's time they put a giant wave machine at Joshua Tree. I would feel better about paying the 10 buck camping fee.

Too bad you're not a climbing noob cause the climbing in Hawaii sucks.
and the surfing in Thailand sucks everywhere I've been.
I bet there is one exotic place with both but I'd be guessing like those above.
Rapa nui?
maybe Cabo?

basilisk - thanks for the link. That's where I first got directed to when I googled "best place to climb and surf". I brought the topic over to the taco since I post here more often!
ontheedgeandscared - not thinking of a move just yet, just pipe dreamin for now.
For climbing, I'm pretty darned smitten with California. Actually, if it weren't for the huge cost of living, this would essentially be the perfect place for me. I've definitely evolved into somewhat of a Californian - a long cry from my midwestern roots. Since I climb a whole heck of a lot more than I surf, I'd choose a climbing town over a surf town to live. But as far as a trip where I'd pack a surfboard AND a harness, but not too much money. From most to least attractive destination, I like:
Brazil
Ecuador
Mexico
South Africa
Indonesia
Hawaii
South America is a pretty chill place to visit. I just saw "City of Men" and it totally made me miss Brazil!

The surf in Ecuador is good. Peru is amazing. Mexico is great too, though the lineups are more crowded. Traveling with a surf board has it's own challenges... I've sort of concluded that surf trips are hard to combine with other stuff if you have to move around a lot. Just think of taking public transportation from Santa Cruz to the valley with your gear and your board!!

edge,
Got any breaks you can recommend in Peru/Ecuador/Mexico?
I was thinking Sayulita Me-Hee-Ko. Padang Padang looked cool too, in Bali. The youtube videos make it look like a 24 hour party, which may be fun...for 24 hours!

Kuan,
Check out wannasurf.com for spots world wide. If something sounds good then get the travel/surf report from surfline.com--the ones you have to pay for-- (it's more accurate re season, the swell that makes a spot work, tides, etc.) Surfing is much more fickle than climbing so you have to pay a lot of attention to that stuff. It would be a drag to show up in Indo and see nothing but rain and flat water!
Sayulita is fun, but is becoming more of a scene. It's a pretty mellow reef break with lots of foriengers as well as locals in the water. There are some beach breaks around there as well. Ecuador has lots of spots. Peru has amazing left handed point breaks, though you need a full suit everywhere but the northern most part of the country. Some of the towns are somewhat grim to hang out in.
I think an easy place to check out with user friendly surf (with warm water) is Costa Rica. There are lots of surf camps etc for beginners, beginning women and whatever else.
Have fun!

Surf was about 8-10' today and you are within 45 minutes of up to 5.14 sport climbing and a little bit of trad. In some cases, you can climb right over the surf or within a couple of minutes of it.
