not obligated to report damage ?

no.

push it. make them make it right. you bought a new car with hidden damage. you aren't the one at fault.

painting the door should be all it needs, right ? i would be afraid that different colored spot has something on the metal under the paint and its going to peel or flake at some point...

Sounds like the paint mix just went bad at that moment in the factory.

When they repaint the door, I predict you will be happy. Good paint shops do this all the time. I have had a couple of paint jobs after repairs. Even though I knew where the damage was, I could not see where the old paint ended and the new began.

(And this was over 20 years ago.)

This summer I repainted some shutters (just touch up, not the whole shutter) on my parent's house. Lowes (Big box home improvement store) mixed paint to match the existing color. One coat - could not tell where - pure amateur job. It was all the paint and color match quality!

I'm shocked that an American Precision Engineering Marvel like a Pontiac would have a flaw and that the dealership wouldn't give you full consideration in fixing it in such a rare instance!

Sadly, in cars and car dealings, sometimes you have to be a squeaky wheel to get greased

Cheers Janet, unfortunately, Legal right doesn't always equate to Moral right. It happens sometimes though...my car was not maintained at all in Italy due to their 'no service' ethic. Once shipped here to SD, the Dealership found I had warped the freewheel on the clutch (toll booth burnouts) They listened to me, appreciated what I said, and warrented the work/parts! If there's one thing I learned in Italy, it's talk, talk, talk, and someone will probably help you out. Painting is so high tech now, that color matching is near factory perfect, hmmmm, maybe an oxymoron ;) Good Luck

Wet sanding, then buffing will only work if the defect is in the top layer, which is clear coat, over the black. If it's in the black base layer they have to repaint both layers. Remember when they sand they're taking away material so it's now thinner than it was and will burn thru if you buff the car a lot.
