Anyone have beta on climbing at the Sierra Buttes? Has anyone done a traverse of the spires?
Thanks!

I am planning on getting up to there sometime this summer. I don't know much about it, however while climbing at Grizzly Dome on Highway 70 I started talking to this older man who said he has put up about 60 routes all throughout the Buttes, some bolted, some not. He said he doesn't have a guide book for it but may write one someday. Sounds good though. Sorry I don't have much beta other than that.

Jason: They sell a guide book for Grizzly Dome at Mountain Sports in Chico. I have it and would be happy to share any beta with you. I could also mail you a guide book if you want. I think they are like ten bucks or something. Send me an email if you like.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure that is the guide i picked up from Mountain sports many years ago but have apparently lost now. I climbed there about 10-11 years ago. I'm leaving for a climbing trip in a couple days and Unfortunately when I pass by grizzly dome, I will be coming from the Quincy direction so wont be able to pick up the guide prior. I was hoping to see if there was any decent info on line but it seems pretty limited. Do you think you could tell me what the routes are rated looking at the wall starting left to right? 10 years ago there were only about 7-8 routes that I remember but I'm sure there are a few more these days.
Thanks again,
Jason

Thanks for the link to the bouldering guide. I've bouldered on the other side, but hadn't ventured into the brush. Hell's Half Mile trail must be pretty special. Someone worked really hard--- that's one of the most overgrown areas I've seen. With the fire season going the way it has, that entire drainage is a prime candidate for the apocalypse.

Stumbled across this thread from a while ago... anyone have any real info on the Sierra Buttes? The link that Chris posted above doesn't offer anything... says it's supposed to appear in the new Nor Cal bouldering guide from ST. It isn't in there... Anyone?

I did a free solo traverse of the Siierra Buttes today from the southernmost spire to the lookout tower. Super cool! Lots of exposure. Some good rock and some loose. Pretty typical alpine ridge climbing. Probably the best one in the sierras north of Bridgeport. It was mostly third and fourth class with little bits of easy 5th here and there. I didn't encounter anything harder than 5.6 or 5.7, but easier or harder variations may exist. The hardest climbing was near the beginning and end of the traverse. Car to car from Upper Sardine Lake took me just under 8 hrs. I definitely recommend it if your hungry for a big day climbing an alpine ridge in the northern Sierra.
